Jack Merridew's Speech
Greetings my friends.
Today I, Jack Merridew, called this meeting to discuss the future for all of us on this island. I recognize that for weeks we have been on this island, for weeks we have led a meaningless existence. I understand that you are all frustrated with the way things are. I understand because I was with all of you every step of the way, I experienced what you have experienced and I understand exactly what you feel: unhappiness about the state things are right now, craving for meat, longing for fun, and yearning to be safe from the beast.
I, Jack Merridew, can solve all of that. With me as leader, things are going to change. We can become the true owners of this paradise, it can be a blank slate where we can all start over. Just imagine, free! Free! Free! Free from the reigns of society. Free of all the stupid work we had to do. Free from all the rules we had to follow. Free, we can be free at last! Do you really want Ralph to be your leader? From what we can see he is completely incompetent in everything he does. How did he become a leader? By blowing in a stupid conch. That does not make him special one bit, I bet that all of us can blow air into a stupid conch. What did he do as leader? A whole lot of nothing that’s what I say. Look at where we are now. What good has he done for us. All he talks about is fire, fire, fire. He does not see what fun we could have on this island. He does not see what a great opportunity this is for us to do things our way.
