Starting from the late 1700’s until the mid 1900’s was a difficult time for the African American community. People were dying for no specific reason, there were no jobs’ and the life conditions were very harsh. The Analyzing of two different poems A Black Man Talks of Reaping by Arna Bontemps and A Negro Speaks of Rivers by Langston Hughes helps us better understand the difficulties in Harlem during the 19th century. The comparison of the similarities and differences between both creates a solid and experienced idea for the reader to understand. The fact that in one poem the author ‘speaks’ and the other one the author ‘talks’ can prove different experiences that these authors have lived trough. They were pretty much lucky to be a little more upper class .Charles Spurgen witnessed a lynching at twelve years of age from intoxicated white men. He watched how his father stood alone brave and didn’t feel threatened he was a role model for his son as well as many other African American. Angelou, through this empowering poem, has insightfully discussed and surely raised awareness of the social issue of racial prejudice - which is, in fact, sadly still present in our world. In furtherance to this, Angelou has also been able to convince us that not only is racial prejudice driven by corrupt ideals and beliefs but rather it is rooted deeply in hatred and jealousy. During the era in which Angelou lived in, there were considerably few advocates and activists for people who were treated with such cruelty all due to their race. The “Sonnet” was written in the late 1800s, where slavery and racism was at its peak. The author, James Weldon Johnson, was a civil rights activist. Although the Harlem Renaissance fizzled out by the mid 1930’s, the works of this era made a change that lasts to this day. Writers such as W.E.B DuBois were highly regarded for how vocal he was in the community and his lack of complacency for the roles that society placed on him because of his color. His attitudes would kindle a sense of Black Pride, which would become an integral part of the Civil Rights Movement, which was on the horizon. Themes of racial identity, freedom and perseverance found in the literature, artwork, and drama of the era motivated and inspired African-Americans to demand more respect from their fellow men. Although the Harlem Renaissance didn’t reach quite reach the social and political change that many people living in the era had hoped for, it set the stage for future change. Perhaps the greatest achievement of the Harlem Renaissance was the heavily influence it had on the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960’s. I plan on using this source to describe the impact that the Harlem Renaissance had on the Civil Rights Movement, which in turn, can also point back to present day America. The seventeenth president, Andrew Johnson was born on December 29th, 1808 in Raleigh, North Carolina. Andrew lived in a log cabin in North Carolina growing up with his brother and parents. Andrew's father was a hotel porter and bank janitor while his mother worked as a weaver and a spinner. Andrew Johnson's father, Jacob died when Andrew was three years old leaving him and brother, William with their mother, Mary leaving them in poverty. Soon after Jacob's death Mary remarried with Turner Dougherty. Andrew Johnson's parents were nearly illiterate and because of this Andrew as well had no basic knowledge of reading, math, or writing. At age fourteen Andrew's parents bound him and his brother as indentured servants to a tailor. They worked for food and lodging but 1824 they ran away, breaking their contract to the tailor.
