This study guide is meant to serve as an outline for independent study for “The Odyssey” Unit Exam. The Exam will be fifty questions total and will include the following testing formats: multiple choice, True/False, one essay question and matching. Student will need a #2 Pencil for testing.
Literary Devices
What Literary Theory is.
Themes discussed in class, what they are, how they are specifically communicated by the text.
Tone and Mood (how they are expressed in the text and can be deduced by particular word choice).
Irony and how it communicates meaning in the text.
Allusions and how they are relevant to character development, mood, and tone.
Vocabulary
Words relevant to Ch. 15-38. (Special Emphasis on words from the last two sections of vocabulary)
Words specific to the period.
Plot
You will need to know the specifics of Chapters 23-38
Special emphasis on Chapters occurring after Jane leaves Thornfield and then returns.
How the beginning of the text directly correlates to the end of the text.
Historical Context
You will need to know how specific events of the Victorian Era:
Effected the character’s perceptions in the text
Reflect convention portrayed
Reflect the plot of the text.
You will need to be able to communicate how specific events during the Victorian Era correlate to trends within the text and are demonstrated through the themes discussed as a class.
