A Position Paper on the Bangsamoro Basic Law (BBL)
It’s been decades that most Muslim communities in Mindanao, if not all, have been involved in armed struggles to liberate and be known for their identity as Bangsamoro. Muslims in the Philippines, particularly in the Southern Philippines, were once a dominant group in the country. Mindanao is always known for its abundance in natural resources and its potential for growth and development. However, these are saddled with insurgencies and armed conflicts between Moro Groups and Government troops causing distress, underdevelopment, unattainable peace and order in this particular island of the Philippines.
In order to answer these problems and in order to attain equity, development and peace in Mindanao, several peace processes and movements led and initiated by the National Government were missioned and geared towards attaining this goal. Let us not forget the sacrifices of Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) and Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) which continuously fighting for their identity and liberating Bangsamoro. In pursuit of their goal of liberating Bangsamoro, the MNLF involved the government forces in extensive armed conflicts, peaking in the early 70s - many lives were sacrificed and tons of blood was shed. For the past months, Congress of the Philippines got busy with the passage of Bangsamoro Basic Law. This position paper is written in support of the Bangsamoro Basic Law and its implementation towards the creation of Bangsamoro Region by 2016. As a Muslim youth who value her Bangsamoro socio-political identity, I believe that this Bangsamoro Basic Law will serve as the political settlement to address the Bangsamoro struggle and aspiration for right to self-determination in Philippines.
