Rivalries and competition are the heart of jealousy. In A Separate Peace jealousy was at the basis of the competition between Gene and Finny, one who was superior in the classroom and one who was superior on the field. Gene let this competition go to the extent of jealousy. Jealousy was what controlled Gene to jounce Finny off the tree. “Finny never permitted himself to realize that when you won they lost. That would have destroyed the perfect beauty which was sport,”(Chapter 3) this quote shows that Finny continually conquered his peers in athletic events. Finny failed to see the unsuccessful side losing on a consistent basis. The invigorated Gene to show Finny that he wasn't the incomparable to his peers. This struck jealousy between…
In the story, the theme of jealousy is introduced through the external conflict expressed within the text. This story takes place in the Middle Ages, during which a physical…
George never dwelled on things too much, whether they were big or small. In New Orleans he was supposed to catch a boat to India but he missed it. He didn't care too much, he just went back to Texas and moved on with his life even though he missed a big opportunity to see more of the world. In George's time, racism was bad, and he wasn't treated equally to a white man. On his way to Cleveland George found out that he had gotten cheated out of his money when buying train tickets in Marshall, the man gave him a one way ticket instead of a round trip. George could have retaliated, but he didn't worry too much because he knew that there wasn't a thing he could do about it. He worked around the situation. When George's daughter got cancer, he was saving money to build a new house, but she needed help with paying for the cancer treatment so that's what the money went for. Unfortunately his daughter died. George could have dwelled on the situation and thought about what else he could have done with his savings, but he didn't regret any of it. Worrying about things only takes the joy out of life and makes you overthink. George did not worry about things, or have regrets and that helped make his life a little more…
Knowles includes another quality that a classic example of a novel would not include. He conveys values and emotions. The emotion jealousy is the biggest emotion. Knowles shows us that jealousy is evil, and nothing good will come of it. Perhaps, through all of his dark themes, Knowles is providing a warning, showing us what will come. Jealousy is a natural human emotion, but Knowles suggests it’s a stronger force than we reckon it to be.…
Harrison Bergeron Setting Essay “Harrison Bergeron”, by Kurt Vulger is a story about a teenager who discovers the problems with the handicapped equality of his dystopian world and tries to speak out about it. Throughout the story a common theme is how nothing new has been invented or changed, everybody and everything is kept at a controlled medium. In this essay we will be exploring the depth of how the setting has affected the kids growing up in it and how the setting caused Harrison to speak out. The setting is important at first because it is the world that Harrison grew up in and it is the world that formed his ideals.…
“Harrison Bergeron,” a short story by Kurt Vonnegut, Jr. and 2081, its movie adaptation, are stories that take place in a totalitarian society where everyone is supposedly equal, but are actually not. Harrison Bergeron, the main character, escapes jail and tries to show society that their lifestyle isn’t equal and that greatness is okay to have, but in the end, Harrison ultimately fails and nobody learns anything. “Harrison Bergeron” and 2081 are stories where characters are heavily symbolic (for political and religious purposes), but whose actions are ultimately ironic in their meaning for readers.…
Although the comparisons are well hidden both today’s society and the story ‘Harrison Bergeron’ share a good amount of similarities. They both have to deal with equality, which leads to problems and consequences. Secondly having to deal with competition and trying to prevent it from occurring, which also leads to problems. Lastly both struggle with normality, and it’s hard to accept that different is okay now.…
The cynicism felt in the story suggests that George is relying on yesterday’s paltry accomplishments rather than trying to achieve prominence today. How can he be proud with this agenda? Well, he cannot, and this is where the false perceptions and false pride…

Has there ever been a time when someone is extremely jealous, and that person does something wrong that they would never do? It has happened many times. In the stories “Harrison Bergeron” by Kurt Vonnegut, Jr. and “All Summer in Day” by Ray Bradbury, jealousy is shown. “Harrison Bergeron” is about the future, when people are all equal, and now nobody is jealous. People can’t be jealous, they can’t compete, so they can’t be jealous, all because they are all equal. “All Summer in a Day” is about the future as well; people are living on Venus as well as…
Overall jealousy was a topic reiterated in many instances throughout the story. Including the end, when they began to fell sympathy for Margot after realizing the pain she was going through without the sun. As they stood there just looking at the closet they would have to live with the regret of doing something truly awful that has caused pain to another. When jealousy consumes you, you may do and say things you felt remorse about later in…
One good example of jealousy in A Midsummer Night 's Dream is Helena 's jealousy toward Hermia at the beginning of the play. Hermia had something Helena wanted more than anything else: Demetrius ' love. This caused Helena to become very jealous and had various negative effects on her mental state. She became suspicious and angry toward Helena. In their fight later in the play, she remarks, "O, when she 's angry, she is keen and shrewd! / She was a vixen when she went to school;/ And though she be but little, she is fierce," (3.2.323-325) a nasty comment to make to someone who was once a close friend. She also started to think much less of herself and have a low self-esteem. This is memorably evidenced when she follows Demetrius through the woods and begs him to take her back as he chased after his true love Hermia. She even pathetically pleads to Demetrius, "What worser place can I beg in your love, --/ And yet a place of high respect with me,--/ Than to be uséd as you use your dog?" (2.1.208-210) In her love and jealousy, she lowers herself to the level of a dog, showing how jealousy, especially over love, can devastate someone emotionally.…
The notion of jealousy is remarkably complex. It can be regarded as proof of great love or as a destructive force. On the one hand, it is typical of a human being to appreciate what he or she bas but on the other hand, if one values it too much, the feeling results in its destruction. The story «Pretty mouth and Green my eyes» by Salinger proves this point of view.…

“Our problems stem from our acceptance of this filthy, rotten system” Dorothy Day. No one deserves to be treated like a doormat. Too often, I knowingly let people walk all over me, and despite the distress that this causes me, I choose to stay quiet about it. My inability to express myself is a result of my fear of the consequences that are associated with me voicing my opinion and the judgments that people will make. After reading and studying “Booker T. and W.E.B.”, as well as “Harrison Bergeron”, I have finally understood the dangers of acceptance and am also comforted with the fact that there is nothing wrong about standing up for myself. Accepting wrongful situations will bring me harm and I must steer clear of this path. And while it…
