Jean Michel Basquiat Research Paper
Reflection of Myself
The topic of my art research paper is the biography of Jean-Michel Basquiat . Basquiat was a famous African-American contemporary Artist known for his flamboyant and bold artwork in the 1980’s. He started an art movement called Neo-Expressionism, which is characterized by intense subjectivity and rough handling of materials. Basquiat was known for this type of art based off of his early works with graffiti.
I choose Basquiat as my topic because as an African-American student, It is quite rare that I get the opportunity to learn about black artist who have impacted the world. Basquiat was a bisexual and was very open with his sexuality. Surprisingly, writers hardly wrote about his relationships with men, they only wrote about his relationships with women such and Madonna and Alex Adler. Basquiat and Warhol were collaborators but also secret, intimate lovers. When Warhol passed away, Basquiat went into a deep depression that caused him to increase his use of heroin. Basquiat struggles many years with his addiction with Heroin, but he was very private and secretive about it due to the media. Unfortunately, A heroin overdose was the cause of his death.
The most difficult part about this research paper was finding reliable facts to include in my paper. Basquiat died at the age of twenty-seven, so his life was difficult to write about. Therefore, my research had to be more in depth and precise in order to obtain accurate information about him. This helped me gain some research skills I will be able to use in college next year.
The research skills I gained definitely prepared me for college because I am capable of doing in depth researching and able to differentiate good research websites from bad research websites. I also learned how to properly cite information without plagiarizing which is really important when writing research papers in college.
Overall, I enjoyed writing this research paper, and I can’t wait to do more next
