My grandmother, Jeanette Flager, answered this way because of her stressful childhood. Moving several times while under a certain age can be hard. But, when those hardships passed, she was starting fresh with her family.
Jeanette Alice Flager was born December 17, 1947, in Deadwood, South Dakota. She was the first of 7 kids. She moved from Deadwood to St. Onge, South Dakota. St. Onge to Denver Colorado. During this time, Jeanette worked a lot on the pig farm. Max and she would also go to Minnesota every year on a fishing trip. On April 21, 1974, Jeanette’s second child, Angelia Corwine, was born. Jeanette says that Angie was a “stubborn one” to give birth to. Jeanette was really enjoying life down in Kansas with her family.
In 1983, Martin died. Jeanette says her father was really important to her, and it was hard to let him go. Shortly after, Cora got remarried to Pete Verhulst, her third husband.
While Angie was a senior in high school, she asked Jeanette if the family could take in junior Tracy Barkley. Max and Jeanette accepted. Jeanette says the process of taking Tracy in was hard with a lot of paperwork. Shortly after, Tracy got married to Stacey Hower. They have 3 kids and are no longer married.
