Jeanie With The Light Brown Hair: Music Journal
Daniel Stephenson
History of Rock and Roll
Chapter 2 Listening Journal
Jeanie With the Light Brown Hair-
Timbre:
A. In this song I hear a flute from the very beginning, after a moment other instruments join, a piano, and a violin, and what seems to be a guitar but I am unsure of what the final instrument is.
B. Mr. Hampson’s voice is the only heard in this song. It is smooth and almost has an opera type feel to it, it is also very deep and resonant it seems.
C. I didn’t notice any further noises besides the instruments listed and the singer’s voice. It seems this is a very clean song with little utilization of outside noise sources.
D. I would say they have an orchestral feel to them with a piano, violin, and flute in the ensemble. I believe

It uses old ballad tradition structures and as the book states it was quite popular when it was written leading me to believe it was written at that point because that’s when ballads were popular.
C. Slavery was still occurring in the U.S., industrialization was also occurring in the north.
Form:
A. The song follows an AABA structure. The first melody (A) is repeated (A) then a new melody is used (B), finally followed by the first melody (A).
Song Lyrics:
A. The song is about someone dreaming and longing for Jeanie with the light brown hair. Throughout the song he points out various good traits and other things to show her in a good light, and it seems she has recently left him because he says things like she is gone.
B. “Happy as the daisies that dance her way” and “ Floating, like vapor, on the soft summer air, among other lines shows that he holds her in the same regard as many features of nature.
Intertextuality:
A. The song makes me feel relaxed and makes me think of good times.
B. It reminds me of classical songs that I listen to to relax at some times.
After the Ball-
Timbre:
A. I hear a violin, and a piano, other than that I can’t really notice much else, but the video makes it harder to tell because it only shows the singer and none of the

There was a clear AAB format in the song. I really enjoyed how all of the instruments were stringed because the sound went together and even when there were different phrasing with the different instruments there was always a consistent consonance that I could hear. I also liked how the music was structured and how it sounded. I made a lot of connections to traditional music in the early 1900s but I also saw similarities to the music I hear…

Using the listening guide also helped me to distinguish each instrument. If I was to hear the music on my own riding in my car I could probably pick out the violin that’s about it only because I played a little growing up. This type of music is not what I am used to hearing mostly gospel, and R&B. I’ve never really listened to music without words. But now that I have, I can honestly say that I will be listening to it more often than usual. Thirty seconds in the music piece I was tapping my foot and moving my fingers on my desk to the rhythm of it. After it was over I found my co-worker staring at me, she then asked was I okay loll. The part I liked most was at 3C (1:45) and 4 (2:19). The section 3C (1:45) reminded me of childhood, watching cartoons. And part 4 (1:45) for the same reason. The rhythm reminded me watching cartoon during the part where a bad part or ending was coming having you on your seat waiting impatiently to see whets going to happen next. In my house as a kid watching cartoons was the highlight of the weekend and summer. My grandmother raised me so there were always soap operas or game shows on constantly. Except Saturday mornings and summer days when granny had to…

They do not let the non-melodic sounds resonant for very long, so that the rhythmic pulse created is clear. The form of the piece starts with the non-melodic rhythmic pulse described above, and then moves to a person that sings a solo over top of it, and back again to the rhythmic pulse. It is similar to a “ABACAD…” format. Dynamic contrast plays a large role in their chanting. For 80% of the piece they sing at a forte dynamic level, but will suddenly brighten their sound and all move to a fortissimo, and then do the exact opposite by going to a mezzo-piano, and singing with a dark tone.…

In the piece we listened to for this assignment, there are multiple instruments making the sound. Each of them is making a different sound and then when the all come together we get an even better and enjoyable sound. There is the Piano, Violin, cello, flute, and Tuba in this piece of music from what I could see. The mood for this piece to me was calming and peaceful, at certain parts it became more uplifting but for the majority it was slow and calm. This performance was great to listen to while I studied because of its calming nature.…

It reminds me a little bit of a Harry Potter movie score. The brass sound around 4:00 definitely helps with the change in mood. The high voice around 5:00 leads the the orchestra into a repetition of the phrase that the high voice began with. It definitely easy to hear the ‘blurry’ colors in the music. It does not sound like any music I’ve heard in a time period previous to…

A Romantic orchestra is being played that guides a tenor voice singer and a chorus of female voices. I love how each of the instruments makes a very gentle sound that the voices of the singers flow together. The dynamics are very gentle until the very end of the song where the sound of the tenor voice and the instruments get very loud to close the song.…
