Jerry Monture: A Short Story
When Tom left the church he still couldn't shake what had just happened, this was something he could never imagine actually happening. His mother, Allison Monture, had just died from brain cancer. As Tom was only 13 years old he took this harder than anyone else, except for his father. Jerry Monture was always grinning widely and never a dull moment of life, but when his wife had passed away, every moment was dull. No words would come out of Jerry's mouth to anyone for weeks, but when he did it was just “Hi Tom, how was school?”, that was it. Not a day will go past in which Tom won't try to help his father with whatever he needs. The only problem is, Jerry doesn't want help. He turns Tom down every time, as if he doesn't want …show more content…
Every Monday and Friday Jerry and his wife, Allison, would go to the beautiful park near their house. Jerry hasn't been there ever since Allison passed away, but that day things changed. He sat on the nearest wooden bench and thought about how much his wife cherished this park. As a tear rolled down Jerrys face he stood up and smashed the bench with his foot, it broke in half. Jerry did this repeatedly and didn't stop. All eyes that were in the park, we're now on him. Luckily his dear friend Matt was in the park and was able to stop …show more content…
1975-2010.” Not long after, Jerry went for a walk and brought the stone with him and a whole bunch of tools. He looked like a handyman. With sweat dripping down his face he was completely finished and finally showed a little smile. It felt like it had been years since he smiled last. The first thing that he did was call Tom and told him to come down to the park and hurry! As Tom walked over to his father he saw his smile and wrapped his arms around him and didn't let go. “What’s wrong!?” Tom asked kind of puzzled. “Oh, nothing's wrong I just wanted you to see what I put together!” Jerry exclaimed. “What are you talking about?” Tom questioned, “I was just here 2 days ago and this bench was sitting right here and…..” “Let me finish, please!” Jerry rudely interrupted, “Look at the right side of the bench.” “At that rock… What does it say on it?” Tom eagerly expressed as he moved his head closer to it. “It's a memorial stone for your mother. I put it by this bench so that we will always have a place to visit and talk to her even though she isn't really there.” Jerry calmly recited. As a tear rolled down Tom's face he hugged his father again and said “I love you, dad!” “I love you too, son.” Jerry

What I observed in the book of Shoeless Joe jerry would have never figure out how bad his life was before he met ray. Jerry would just stay at home all the time and stopped writing. Once Ray came into his life, he had a little bit of fun on this crazy adventure he went on. Jerry would have never found out about how much he loved baseball and found his passion again for writing. Jerry also helped Ray figure out some things. Jerry helped Ray realize how much more family is important to him by Jerry getting chosen to go with the players. Also Jerry helps ray control his jealousy by saying what you have is good and you need to be there for Karin and Annie. While Jerry gets to go because his family is all grown and they don't necessarily need him.…

Similarly, Jerry 's defiance also keeps him from selling the chocolates and defying authorities. First, when all of the strange things like prank phone calls and people outside his house happen to Jerry, his reactions are defiant. Jerry shows defiance because he feels that he does not need anyone 's help and can get all of the chocolate business out of the way himself with no one 's assistance. Second, when Jerry would say, " 'Because I don 't want to '" (163), whenever asked why he does not sell chocolates, Jerry shows his defiance by not telling anyone the reason why he does not sell the chocolates no matter what anyone tells him. Instead of giving everyone a real, straight answer, he would defy anyone who asked that question.…

As the movie goes on, it becomes more obvious this character’s detachment and isolation from the rest of the world. The viewer becomes aware that Jerry is in need of a great deal of money and was attempting to get it from his wealthy father-in-law. His first attempt is to get a loan from his father-in-law for a real estate deal. When that deal falls through, there is a shot of Jerry walking back to his car, defeated.
