Jesus: Literal 24-Hour Days In The Bible
My first interviewee was my cousin. He believes that the days in Genesis were literal 24-hour days. He supported this belief by citing other instances of the word “Yom” meaning literal 24-hour periods. Going along with a literal interpretation of the Bible, he believes that when you add the 2,000 years between Adam and Abraham to the 4,000 years since Abraham, you come to a total of 6,000 years old. My cousin does not believe that humans and apes share a common ancestor. His explanation is that although God created them on the same day, He created them separately. My cousin also believes that the account of Adam and Eve is true and supported by multiple people in the Bible, even Jesus himself, treating him as a historical figure.
My second interviewee was a family friend. He believes that Genesis is a literary story, and the “days” in Genesis are neither 24-hour periods nor long periods of time. According to him, the earth is 4.5 billion years old because that is what science and physics prove. He also believes that humans and apes share an ancestor and that Lucy is the perfect example. He went on to say that looking at humans and apes show their similarities. He supported this idea by the studies of DNA that

In Genesis, it says, “there was evening and there was morning on the ___ day.” This cycle of light and darkness implies one normal day, not periods of time. When discussing the word “day” it is important to take into account the Hebrew word “Yom”, interpreted as “day.” The word “Yom” is used multiple times in the Bible and has different meanings depending on the words around it. In Genesis, the word “Yom” is found in singular form followed by a number, which based on a grammatical analysis done by Steven Boyd, is determined to mean a literal 24-hour period. To be considered more than a day it would have had to been found plural and surrounded by prepositional phrases, which is was

Neither here nor in verses 14-18 is an original creative act implied. A different word is used. The sense is, made to appear; made visible. The sun and moon were created "in the beginning." The "light" of course came from the sun, but the vapor diffused the light. Later the sun appeared in an unclouded sky. Genesis 1:5 - And God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And the evening and the morning were the first day. The word "day" is used in Scripture in three ways:…

He created the sun, moon, stars, heaven, and hell. In the Genesis creation we are faced with a divine drama of the beginning that can only be understood through faith. How long did it really take? Are Gods days the same as ours or are they longer? These questions may never be answered in this life time, and are not the focus of the Genesis creation. It is more about the spiritual and moral revelations. Genesis 1:26, God said, "Let us make man in our image, after our likeness..." In the creation of the world, this is the only time God refers to himself in the plural form. Then God took the man Adam, and the woman Eve, and placed them in the Garden of Eden to take care of it, and he told them to be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth (Genesis 1: 28). Then God commanded Adam and Eve saying, "Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat: But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die" (Genesis 2:16-17). The story continues with the devil, also known as the serpent, tricking Eve into eating from the forbidden tree and convincing her to get Adam to eat also. The result of them going against Gods commandment was being expelled from the Garden of Eden, and being forced to labor over the earth. Humans will experience pain and suffering, weeds, thorns, and…

In Works and Days, Hesiod depicts a mystical story of punishment when Zeus decides to create a beautiful woman named Pandora to punish Prometheus for stealing fire. He then gave Pandora a jar containing misery and turmoil and sends her to Epimetheus who is Prometheus’s cousin where he accepts her and she swiftly releases evil upon man. Yet Elpis the spirit of hope stays in the jar. Elpis was in the jar of turmoil which leads the audience to the suggestion that Elpis is also an evil “for earth is full of evils” (Hesiod, Works and Days, 101). Elpis is kept away from man because the jar acts as a prison, where man cannot access idle hope. Zeus may not have released Elpis because “the idle man who waits on empty hope, lacking a livelihood, lays…

    Interview By Mariam Estes

For the interview project, I interviewed a woman, Mariam Estes, who practices Islam. My interviewee is from Columbus, Ohio and due to her distance, we did a skype call. It went similar as a traditional interview. For me, the interview was not only informative but a learning and educational experience. I learned a lot more from asking her questions than if I would have reading an article or book. Her experiences are unique to her, which is what I found most intriguing. It only took a little bit of preparation to plan for the interview, due to my previous and outlying interest in Islam it was easy for me to think of questions that not only I found interesting but I could easily relate back to the course. Since I previously knew who I was interviewing but, never spoke with her about this topic I…

My interviewee is a young person not much younger than me, but someone I have watched grow up from about age 10. We used to play together, she the girl I made fun of because of "cooties", and I was the boy she used to call "apple head". I chose to interview her because I know her history, and she is someone I have always been meaning to get to know her more now that she is older and this was a good opportunity. She also is a multiracial adolescent much like myself, and I anticipated that this might be beneficial to our conversation because we have that in common. This interview was very conversational, and it really went wherever it liked without needing questions to guide it. I did try and reframe some of my questions in order to stay somewhat on track with my outline for the conversation. Some of my main questions were:…
