She takes them to an expensive toy store so they can look at how some people live and what they spend their money on. The main Character in this story Sylvia and Miss Moore. Sylvia is the narrator and she is a little black girl that comes from a very poor family. Miss Moore is an educated woman that shows Sylvia and her friends how other people live and how unreasonable it.
In this story the girls decide it is not worth all that money for simple toys that will break and have no meaning. They decide in the end to go use what little money they have on entertainment and food.
The resolution of this story tells us how the world is not divided up evenly among classes. They money that the rich people spend on the expensive toys could be used to feed a family for a whole year. This is just an example of how the different classes of people and how some people live beyond their means while others are struggling to live at all.
Part II
One lesson that Miss Moore tries to teach the children is the importance of responsibility. She talks to them about how much money their parents make and how much it cost to live and all the expenses their parents have. She hands Sylvia money to pay the taxi driver with and tells her the give him a 10 percent tip. Sylvia has to use her math skill to figure this out. She would much rather take the money and spend it on something else like food. Sylvia is too busy thinking about food and what she could buy with this 5-dollar bill. This shows a level of poverty and how they are of a lower class level.
Miss Moore is trying to teach the girls arithmetic and they don’t have any interest in learning. Miss Moore who is an educated woman is trying to teach the girls the importance of education and how if you learn it can help you out. The girls in this story probably did not have much school or good schooling.
The girls talk about their lives and how they don’t have basic things. They state that they don’t have a desk to do their homework on. Then one of the girl’s states she never has homework witch shows the lack of schooling and education. Another person says they don’t even have a home. These statements show that they are raised in a poor lifestyle and there are major differences of the life styles around them that they don’t get to live.

Different symbols are shown in “The Lesson” by Toni Cade Bambara, that depicts the economic and social inequality faced by society, specifically the children in the story. The story touches on the situation the children are stuck in living in almost poverty, it is up to the children to change their fate. The use of irony helps portray how the trip ended up teaching Sylvia more than she expected despite her doubt. Towards the end of the story, Silvia realizes that she actually was able to benefit from the trip unlike she thought she would in the beginning of the story, “And she’s lookin very closely at me like maybe she plannin to do my portrait from memory.…

This story revolves around a trip taken by five young children, accompanied by a woman named Miss Moore, to Fifth Avenue in New York. Miss Moore takes these young children to this precise location in order to teach them a lesson regarding the invisible privileges and vastly greater possibilities of wealthy individuals living in America. Although main character Sylvia does not strongly or outwardly express a will or newfound desire to change her currently low economic status for her future self, the reader is able to interpret by a specific line in this short story that she has undergone a significant transformation. Towards the conclusion on this publication, the reader can observe Sylvia's interest in overviewing what she had learned earlier that day. Sylvia mentally states, “Ain’t nobody gonna beat me at nothin,” which suggests that her stubborn, hardheaded resistance to see the truth in front of her has been transformed. Her transformation will perhaps drive her will to succeed financially in the future. This fiery, young lady certainly seems to be expressing a different outlook not only on the leader of the field trip, Miss Moore, who she formally resented and ridiculed, but also on her future aspirations to become successful. The reader may be able to infer that young Sylvia has learned the lesson of social inequality and her discovery of such an existence, motivates her will to one day become educated and financially stable. Even though the entire short story does not revolve around Sylvia expressing an acceptance or reason to change her once ignorant outlook on society, she certainly gives sufficient reason through her actions and her mental thoughts that she is going to strive to make a difference in her current…

For example when Jeannette was trying to own up to her sister's promise she couldn’t. She wanted to so bad but to other people that had read that quote that's motivation that the author was trying to tell us. Why this illustrates with other people till today is that there's examples out in the real world with poverty and also have their own different type of struggles just as Jeannette’s. On the page 255 Jeannette presents again about being homelessness from the parents view making the entire situation that they’re in a great wild adventure. Admittedly, it is true that these kids have inherited poor values from their parents. “It also touches on the irresponsibility of lower class parents when it comes to raising their children (Friedman 2).” This is where Miss Moore, the antagonist, comes in. She tries to show these kids what it means to have opportunity to be successful and have a nice life. “She’d been to college and said it was only right that she should take responsibility for the young ones’ education. And she not even related by marriage or blood (pg. 183).” The author portrays Miss Moore as being a proper adult figure for the kids as she shows them the world other than the one they live in.…

My first six weeks of school has been right in the middle of wonderful and terrible. The first few days of school I was sanguine. But then after that it was as though someone put a malediction on me and everything just got worse. Of course the first few days we didn’t have that much work, but it kept steadily increasing. But it wasn’t the school work that really bothered me; it was the amount of homework. Every night I had at least 3 different classes with homework and it was wanton and not tantamount with past years of homework. But besides that, most of my classes were good. Although my least favorite class is History at the moment because of the amount of homework and work we do. It is like the teacher rebuffs the fact we might have other extracurricular activities outside of school, along with free time every kid needs, and we also have about three assignments every day. It undermines my enthusiasm for history and it’s almost obliterated my enthusiasm for it completely. My next least favorite class is science. The first reason is because in science fair we have to have our topic sanctioned, and she never approves anything I turn in. Also she teaches brand new topics to us as though we are not all a neophyte at that topic but as though we’re professionals at that topic. Math and speech are parity for my next least favorite classes. Math is one because the teacher doesn’t teach very well, and Speech because I don’t like talking in front of others. But I will acquiescently agree to speak if it is required. Second place in my order of favorites is my English class. Mrs. Clark is a paragon and makes the lessons fun, yet we still learn a lot (She also thinks Robert is a vagrant and quarantines him because she thinks that wandering the streets might contaminate him with some sort of disease). Lastly, even though I think Mrs. Clark deserves and accolade for being awesome, Spanish is my favorite class. It is…

The two short stories I have studied are The Garden Party and The Doll's House, both written by Katherine Mansfield. The main theme in both short stories conveys the idea of class conflict. This general theme has been broken down into similar focus points in each story. The Garden Party addresses the insensitivity of the rich thinking that the poor have no feelings whereas The Doll's House refers to the society's acceptance of cultural and economic boundaries. The various methods that have been used to present these emotional aspects of class conflict have been used effectively though somewhat differently in each text.…
