Appeals of Advertising

Potential customers are always attracted by advertising companies in at least some sort of way. These companies have learned over time that some things sell better based on the time period. The media have found ways to make topics more appealing to the consumer by providing an emotional connection. The human mind works on emotions and our senses react when there is something we desire. Those who do the marketing where we see the many hundreds of advertising each day, try to trigger an emotion that will create a need for us to have something we don’t particularly need. In this essay, there will be a few examples and how they differ from each other and also, relating back to Jib Fowles’ Advertising Fifteen Basic Appeals

Advertisers use appeal in different ways depending on the audience they are aiming the message to. Most advertisements use the same kind of appeal because they need the most logical to attract the most consumers. Although there are a number of many different types of appeals advertisements use, among five are most common. As said in Wimbush’s internet article, the most common five are: fear, humor, rational, sex, or bandwagon propaganda. Most can speak for themselves. For example, humor will make someone laugh and sex will create the desire to feel the need for sex. Fear can be easy to point out too because if you see something that you’re afraid of and know that’s something that will have to changed, then that will bring it to your attention. For example, if there is an advertisement showing that people need to get their flu shot vaccinations otherwise they will be affected with a sickness much easier will make people afraid of being sick and go get that vaccination. Rational appeal shows the customer the benefits associated with the product and backs up its claims with proof. The most common that people desire is not wanting to miss out on something someone has done before, therefore this being the bandwagon appeal. Mostly common because everyone wants you be able to accomplish something that is doable especially if other people have done it before.
