Jim Loftus: Veteran In The Radio Industry
Jim Loftus Reflection Paper Jim Loftus is a veteran in the radio industry. Although I have no aspirations to pursue a career in radio, he provided several insights that are applicable in many aspects of life. Loftus’ story of how he became CEO of More FM resonated with me. Early on in his career he was told that he would not make it in the radio industry. Ironically, the same person that told him that, he would end up working with that individual several years later. I was able to relate with this story. I frequently feel doubted by my colleagues and family who do not agree with my career choice. I am told communications is not a legitimate field, and I will not make any money. Furthermore, I live with people who are accountant and computer

There are many people that give the advice, “Do what you love,” while, in contrast, other people will give the advice, “Do what makes money.” These two pieces of advice are very conflicting and it brings up the argument - should you do what you love or what makes the money? For both sides of the argument, there is support and reasoning that is very valid and persuasive. By looking at the argument subjectively, it is difficult to choose a side; each argument has its pros and cons. I believe that there should be a balance of both. Everyone has passions and if an individual has the opportunity to turn his…

There is a fire that ignites within me when I talk about my aspirations in life. A fire that burns so brightly that it can not only be seen physically in the way my hazel eyes light up, but felt radiating from my soul through the conversations that others have with me. Even when I was younger this fire always burned within me to better the world and aid those suffering in it. Many individuals feel they do not have the time or ability to pursue their desired career. Although there is more semblance of stability to playing it safe, consequently, they become relegated into jobs that they lack passion for, thereby stifling opportunity. Adam contrasts the two career paths by stating the idea that optimal job satisfaction comes from the process of “doing what you would like to and getting paid for it.” He elaborates that while enjoying the work that you do, more opportunities will present themselves along the way. Citing the cancellation of his morning radio show in 2009, Carolla states that there is no straight path towards success and the ability to overcome the various obstacles in life will determine whether or not they become a steps-back or opportunities for moving forward.…

Following my reading chapter 1 of Let Your Life Speak, I identified connections to the author. For a better part of the last decade, I have grappled with discovering a vocation that satisfies my passion. Wanting to complete work that encompasses a higher purpose was not a foreign desire. Identifying a vocation that balances who I am has been a personal stressor. The author mentions that vocation comes from listening, a concept I unequivocally love. Many, live a life that is surrounded by metaphoric noise, which in turn numbs one’s ability to associate with one’s self. Finding a professional fit consumed my thought process, which in turn obstructed me from centering on the present. The bulk of my thoughts contained concerns of potential youthful errors that inhibited my occupational search.” Additionally I fought with the self-imposed question, “will I figure this out, will I die without knowing what I aspired to be.”…

At 44 years of age, Will felt that he had climbed the corporate ladder about as high as he was likely to go. He also had doubts about remaining in a large corporation for the rest of his working life. The present position Will held was director of marketing research for a large electronics corporation located in Houston, Texas. Despite the title, Will felt his position was not satisfying. “Marketing research in an industrial company just isn’t very exciting or personally rewarding; in fact, it’s downright dull.” This statement pretty well summarized Will’s feelings. Although Will had been trained as an engineer, he discovered that engineering wasn’t his primary interest and began to move into marketing. When the position of marketing research director opened in his company, Will applied and was elated when he learned he had received the position. In reviewing this move, Will stated that he believed the fact that he had recently completed an MBA during part-time studies had helped him to obtain the position.…

On the first day of the communication week we were introduced to the ‘Four P’s of Success’ framework to help us find the right career. Our group spent a session on one of the P’s namely Passion. We used a funnel approach starting from broader interests narrowing it down to our passions, before finalizing on a singular item that we could relate to and communicate effectively. There was a common thread linking a lot of my interests which culminated in the final selection of ‘identifying trends/making forecasts’ as a passion for me. One of the reasons I cherish my old job was that I had a chance to work in the strategy/business side for a bank during the recession which helped me use this quite regularly.…
