James Earl Carter Jr. was born on October 1, 1924, in Plains, Georgia. Grew up on a peanut farm that is father owned as well as a warehouse and store. James Carter became the first person from his father's side of the family to graduate from high school. He then studied engineering at Georgia Southwestern Junior College before joining the Naval ROTC program to continue his engineering studies at the Georgia Institute of Technology, graduation in 1946 from the Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland. Then had reconnected with a childhood friend named Rosalynn Smith and married her June of 1946. After he then served seven years’ service as a naval officer.
Carter had three sons John William, James Earl Carter III and Donnel Jeffrey, as well as a daughter named Amy. July 1953, Carter's father passed away from cancer and after his death, the farm and family business plummeted.
