It was if he was living another boy's life. Jimmy walked around this shack he was now in, creeped out as can be. Terrible smells and messes everywhere made Jimmy think how could somebody live this way. The noise of a door opening startled Jimmy and gave him the nerve to hide. He saw a woman with messy hair and beat up clothes say “Blake, I'm home.” After a few moments the lady started looking around. With the corner of this ladies eye she saw Jimmy hiding behind a chair. She said “Blake why are you hiding?”. And with Jimmy’s first instinct he said “I'm not Blake”. She then chuckled and said “Stop fooling with me.” Jimmy escaped the situation and found a run down bathroom. Jimmy looked at the cracked and crooked mirror, and he did not see the old Jimmy. He saw a whole different person with all different features. After a while of thinking about this situation Jimmy realized he was in a different body. As he fell into the hole he became completely trapped in a different body. Jimmy decided to go with the flow and do what it took to get out of this awful situation. Quickly Jimmy,A.K.A Blake in this other life realized Blake’s life was rough. The mother would leave very early in the morning to stand in the streets to ask for food so she could feed herself and Blake. Chris has a dream of becoming an engineer but his environment prohibits him. He is a hopeful young man who moves into Manawaka to attend high school. The relationship between Chris and Vanessa offers insight into Chris’s inner most thoughts and motivations. He says, “What I am going to be is an engineer, civil engineer.(287)” This statement is juxtaposed with “The Depression did not get better, as everyone had been saying it would. It got worse, and so did the drought.(288)” This contrast is used to establish the central conflict of the story, Chris’s unachievable dream. The Depression is Chris’s inescapable circumstance that he has no way of overcoming. Although he is innovative and hardworking there is nothing he can do about his environment. Throughout the exposition, of the story Grandfather Connor acts as a reminder of Chris’s reality. He references Chris’s deceased father by mocking Chris for chasing his dreams. “Wilf wasn’t much good, even as a young man… If the boy takes after his father, it’s a poor lookout for him. (285)” This quote not only foreshadows the inevitability of Chris’ failure, but also reminds him of his hopeless reality. The Depression is described by Vanessa as an uncontrollable force brought upon the people by a malevolent God. An allusion to the Bible is made when Vanessa describes the depression’s effect on Manawaka as “Children of Israel being afflicted by Jehovah but never in real danger of annihilation(288)” this again reaffirms the circumstance of Chris’s environment are…

“Driving Lessons,” written by Neal Bowers, relays the message through a young man’s driving lesson. Bowers highlights the son’s relationship with mother in this intimate setting – confined in a car. Flashbacks illuminate the true dynamic between the two and the rest of the family. Here, the young man is caught in between the crossfire between his parents of whom he illustrates as “my father impatient, my mother/ trying hard to smile” (Bowers 37-38). He can see through the façade his parents put on which disturbs him greatly. Once walked out on by his mother for a short period of time, he recognizes the vitality of her presence for him and his family. Even within that short period of time in which she was gone he understands how she has shaped him as a person, as he says, “the boy I would have been if/ my mother had kept on walking” (Bowers 29,30).…

James’ home life is the polar opposite of what he dreams his home life could be. James recalls wishing he were in the TV show “Father Knows Best.” The show tells of the ideal American household, with a well dressed father coming home from work every day to greet his perfect family. On the other hand, James’ stepfather would come home only on weekends, busy and distracted. He and his siblings would walk around with giant holes in their pants and the cheapest pair of shoes on the market. It seems that James’ dream, the perfect life, does not exist for anyone; only in the television world.…

My white knuckles clutched the wheel as my little car whined and jerked into high gear, finally accelerating onto Six Forks. Barely a mile from home, and driving was already intimidating. My credentials were impeccable. I had passed a dreadful thirty hour class with a teacher whose voice carried to the moon and proven my driving prowess to a cartoonish instructor sporting a beret, plaid shirt, corduroy jacket, billowy pants, and a pair of suspenders. A pair of rimless spectacles made his eyes appear small and beady while accentuating his pudgy face. There was no conceivable reason to be nervous, but I could not shake the grim sense of foreboding that hovered over me.…

I once lived an American Dream in Midwest America through the vision of a perfect stranger who went on to become my soul friend. He used to live in a tiny town called Perham in Minnesota. The town had a population of only 1,000 people at that time (this was in 1990). He was a typical American jock. He used to love everything his country could offer a rowdy all American white boy: blonde women, fast food, fast cars, American football, beer, and the chance to pick up fights at college fraternity parties. He was full of American capitalism. His name was James Scott Morris. I fondly called him, Jimmy boy.…
