John Deere grew up in a family that was basically living in poverty. John Deere had 3 siblings, Francis, Elizabeth, and George. John moved to Middlebury to be an apprentice in a blacksmithing shop. John was paid very little to work this job, but her he was learning as he went along. Captain Lawrence was the teacher teaching him everything. John looked up to him, and considered him to be a father, partially because John lost his father at a young age.
For many years, John Deere just did simple jobs making money after his schooling like making horseshoes and kitchen items. John was content living this lifestyle and making money with his simple jobs. While living the life he was, John met his future wife, Demarius Lamb, who was a boarding student in Middlebury. John and Damaris got married and had five kids. With John's simple job, he was not making enough money support a large family like he had. John packed up his family and moved to Vermont to look for a blacksmithing
