After his adolescence, he became less sick and when he went into college his attention was focused on sports and woman he would get bad grades in the classes he wasn’t interested in but would excel in the classes he was interested in. Towards the end of his college life in Harvard, he got himself focused on his studies and took them seriously when he saw what he was capable of great things. John Kennedy had to write a thesis for his college graduation in 1940; he decided to research and write a report on why great Britain failed to be prepared for war against Germany in world war two. The report was made into the book known as “Why England Slept” because it was “so well received” at his graduation and he sold 80,000 copies of the book which was his very first book ever made. After college, he joined the U.S. Navy and was given command of a Patrol torpedo boat known as PT-109. On August 2,1943 a Japanese warship found Kennedy and his crew and ran into them, which caused Kennedy’s boat to split into two. After his brother’s death, he decided to run for congressman in Massachusetts in the year 1946. John Kennedy was dependent upon his family, college friends, and naval officers in helping him in his political campaigns. Although he had help from his family and social networks, he himself became popular in his own right to the Massachusetts people by what he said in his debates. “ In the Democratic primary he received nearly double the vote of his nearest opponent; in the November election he overwhelmed the Republican candidate. Kennedy tried to help veterans with housing and after two years he finally got the major housing bill passed. He was happy the bill was passed, but sad because many veterans had to go without for those two years. He also believed federal assistance in schools was important, but debated cautiously for parochial schools, and to avoid breaking the first amendment he wrote a draft of an amendment that would allow federal assistance for non educational purposes for parochial schools.
