“Stay gold, Ponyboy. Stay gold”(IMDb). This is a famous quote from The Outsiders The Outsiders is a book and a movie. The book and the movie are both excellent. and hides in a church. The church catches on fire and Johnny is injured trying to rescue children inside. Then Johnny dies in the hospital while the greasers win the rumble. Due to all these events, Before Johnny dies he tries to persuade Ponyboy to stay innocent. In this essay we will discuss the differences and the similarities between the book and the movie.
The book had three main differences from the movie. The first difference the book had that was not included in the movie is the character named Sandy. Sandy is Soda's girlfriend. This is significant because Soda was going to ask her to marry him, however she moved away. The second difference that makes the book unique is that Ponyboy got a hurt during the rumble. He got kicked in the head hard which gave him a concussion. This is significant because the concussion led to him falling behind in his school work. In order to bring up his grades he writes a the story of The Outsiders. The third difference that is exclusive in the story is that they discussed Pony’s education and how he was a track star. This is significant because it added to Pony’s character.
The movie also has several differences that separate it from the book. The first difference is that it shows Pony writing a story in the beginning of the movie. This is significant because you never really find out why he was writing the story in the movie. The second difference that is particular to the movie is it shows Dally actually rob the store. In the movie he ripped up a newspaper, went up to the cashier and threatened the cashier with his gun. As he was leaving the cashier tried to shoot Dally (Coppola). This made the scene more exciting in the movie. The third difference in the movie happened during the rumble. At the start of the rumble it started to rain (SparkNotes). The significant of the rain in the movie is that it sets the dreary mood of the scene. Also making the rumble unique in the movie was the fact that there were more than 5 cars that pulled up on the socs side. This showed the socs had more manpower than the greasers. This magnified the victory over the socs.
Although we have shown the differences between the book and the movie, there are many similarities.
The first similarity of the book and the movie is the part where Pony and Johnny both go to the lot. Hear they both fell asleep which made Ponyboy late. This led to Pony’s brother, Darry being very upset. Then Pony and Johnny to ran away to the park. The socs came and that's when Johnny killed Bob (Hinton 42-49). The second similarity is they had the rumble of the greasers vs. the socs in both the movie and the book. The fight might of happened a little differently in each, but they both had the rumble. One last similarity that is in both the movie and book is that Dally died because Johnny died. These similarities kept the storyline of the movie and the book the same.
