John Heckewelder’s story tells about the Europeans arriving in a remarkably large ship that the Native Americans had never seen before. The curious ship along with a small canoe came to the shore. The Native Americans watched eagerly at a male person dressed in all red and other human beings with white skin coming on shore. They assumed this man was the Great or Supreme Being named Mannitto. The two parties met aground and exchanged greetings. The Europeans served up alcohol as an offering to the Native Americans. The Natives didn’t know what liquor was, therefore, they just smelled it and decided they would not take a drink. However one brave, great warrior of the Natives thought it would be offensive not to take a drink and finished up the…
I was sitting in the doctor’s office this morning waiting for my appointment, thinking about what current event I could choose that would include the 6 sociological concepts. I was at a loss. Syria crossed my mind. Obama care was a thought. But my answer was lying on the coffee table beside me with a Sports Illustrated cover and the picture of a football phenom with a number 2 jersey emblazoning his torso and wearing his Texas A&M helmet. I picked up the magazine and found the article on page 26 and started to read.…

The Bible among Myths by John N. Oswalt is among the best apologetics of the recent times. The book seeks to debunk the ideas, which secular scholars have been propagating in the recent years, that the Old Testament chapters of the bible are part of the Ancient Near East Mythology. In essence, what Oswalt does in this book is to show that any arguments linking the Old Testament with the Ancient Near East Mythology are misguided. In so doing, Oswalt endeavors to make it plain to readers that literature from such scholars is misleading. In a bid to achieve this goal, Oswalt chooses to approach the book from a polemical viewpoint to convey his point. His introductory argument anchors on the assertion that in the last five decades much has not changed insofar as the content of the Old Testament is concerned, yet the perception of scholars has radically changed in the same duration (Oswalt 2009, 11-12). Currently, most scholars have lost esteem for the Old Testament, and to them, it is just another Ancient Near East myth. Some scholars consider the Old Testament as ‘remarkably similar’ to Ancient Near East mythical literature associated with other Semitic religions that…
The foundation of orthodoxy and the New Testament Canon are connected to one another because they were used and based on scriptures and testimonies written by the Apostles. Christians believed the writings of the Apostles because in their minds there was no reason to question those authoritative writings since they had documented the time that they spent with Jesus and the instructions that he gave to each Apostle as well as giving them instructions on the church. Bruce Metzger, states that “The issues were whether the Rule of Faith determined the extent of the canon or was shaped by it and what constituted apostolicity and authority of Scripture.”(Metzger,1987:127). According to Metzger, “The New Testament book opens with a judicious and critical analysis of scholarly writings on the subject of the canon prior to and during the twentieth century.” (Metzger, 1987:127). The early church was dealing with many challenges internally and externally. There were movements that were within the church that questioned the orthodoxy and the New Testament canon. One of the movements included the Gnosticism, with its claim to esoteric knowledge that supplements and basically alters the outlook of the writers of the New Testament: the attempt by Marcion to sever the connection with Judaism by discarding the Old Testament and reducing the authoritative Christian writings to an expurgated edition of Luke and the letters of Paul; and Montanism, which claimed to supplement the New Testament by revelatory insights and discourses (Metzger, 1987:127). A major factor in the East was the canonical letter of Athanasius of Alexandria in 367, in which…
In this chapter, Oswalt sets out to determine whether the Bible is historical. Oswalt agrees that the Bible is historical and tells us that historicity is important to Hebrew thought. Oswalt then takes on three questions 1.) Did they occur? 2.) Are they accurately reported? 3.) Are they correctly interpreted? Oswalt, in the chapter, discuss the two kinds of history: Historie and Geschichte, and he tells us that Historie defines what have really happened while Geschichte tells what was going on. Oswalt states Historie is the domain of the historian; and Geschichte, on the other hand is the domain of the theologian. In the same chapter, Oswalt examines the Bultmannian approach, as well as Process approaches to history. The Bultmannian was named…
Jasper Johns was born in Georgia in 1930 and grew up in South Carolina. The simplification of such complex concepts makes it easier for readers who have little to no prior religious understanding to comprehend the basic themes of this novel. For this reason, Armstrong's work has been highly popular among individuals who are seeking a deeper understanding of their faith, or other widespread religions. This aside, it is not a reliable academic text. An overwhelming amount of statements and claims made in this book are coloured by opinion, and are in fact, not of any legitimate substance. Any one reading this novel must interpret it with a grain of salt, and it should not be used to contribute to any scholarly studies. Armstrong plucks what she deems to be important from religious texts, and implements it into her writing, yet she misses crucial facts while doing so. For example, there are inadequate references to the Israelites Exodus from Egypt, considering the grave importance placed on this story in Judaism. This leads one to enquire what other facts may have been left out, or over emphasized. Academic texts are meant to be impartial, yet A History of God is at times warped to prove an opinion of…

From reading the book, “Secret Life of Walter Mitty” and watching the movie, it is made clear that Walter Mitty is not just any ordinary man. In both the short story and the movie, it seems Walter Mitty is completely lost. Mitty has trouble focusing on what is in front of him, instead he daydreams about an exciting life, that he does not have. The book and movie both show how Mitty has relationship issues, how his daily routine is absolutely boring and how he daydreams about the exciting life he actually wants.…
The first 39 books of the larger work called the Bible, is called the Old Testament. The Bible itself is arguably the best selling and most read book of all time, yet it’s well known to be quite challenging to read through and understand. The Old Testament portion of the Bible, notably the most difficult portion of the Bible for most to study and follow, yields 39 books from multiple authors, and spans over 4000 years of crucial world and church history. If that were not enough to take on, the Old Testament comes our way through multiple styles of authorship and formats, including but not limited to, books of history, law, proverbs, ethics, philosophy, treatises, dramas, songs, epics, biographies, and letters. There have been many books written and published to survey, explain, and/or bring to light the Old Testament, but none more helpful to me than the review subject of this paper, the work of Dr. Elmer L. Towns, entitled “A Journey Through the Old Testament”.…
