In this cartoon, Mike Luckovich is referring to the controversial use of the word “nigger” within Mark Twain’s novel The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. Luckovich wants his audience to note the changes in the meaning of the “n-word” over time. In the early 19th century, the “n-word” was a common term used to identify an African American. In today’s society, this word can often be heard throughout pop culture and rap lyrics, which is why the young boy has mistakenly referred to Mark Twain as one of the great “gangsta rappers.” However, Luckovich uses this scenario to indirectly explain that since the “n-word” is considered an acceptable identification of an African American in modern music, why should it not be allowed within Twain’s work?…
Mrs Singh and her husband speak minimal English. This would firstly be a barrier between the MDT staff present at the meeting and themselves. The MDT team are using jargon and large words that neither Mrs Singh nor her husband can understand because of their lack of English language. They would have to try and guess what was being said through body language, facial expressions and tone of voice. What is being said can be completely misunderstood and can make the situation a lot worse. In this scenario a translator would have been effective in breaking the barrier between Mrs Singh, her husband and the…
In One flew over the cuckoo’s nest, Ken Kesey uses first person narration by a secondary character using a subjective tone. By using an unstable perspective of a schizophrenic Indian, Bromden, results in ambiguity leading the readers to make decisions on which parts of the plot are real and which are hallucinated. Sentence structure and machine imagery help emphasise the ambiguity of the novel by placing the reader through the mind of Bromden. Through using these techniques Kesey mystifies the plot which makes the reader to ponder over whether the plot is real or hallucinated.…
In Elie Wiesel’s Night the scenes of the hangings represent a turning point for Elie’s faith in God and affect him and the reader alike. The first hanging of the dentist fails to torment Elie. He recalls, “I remember that on the evening, the soup tasted better than ever” (Wiesel 63). Seemingly, the death of the dentist causes Elie to be indifferent. The dentist assists the Nazi force by pulling gold teeth from the mouths of the prisoners and his death meant the preservation of Elie’s crown. However, later the guards hang a pipel and two men for involvement in resistance activities. The pipel's light stature cause his death to remain prolonged and filled with suffering compared to the men’s deaths. As the prisoners walk by, Elie notices the…
This pamphlet was instrumental in inciting the American masses to rise up against the British through its use of simple and clear language. By using layman language, Thomas Paine could communicate his message to the average American citizen. Even though he was not religious, Paine used biblical references in order to appeal to the masses who were religious and thought of the Bible as the ultimate authority. Doing so, he was able to push them towards striving for American independence as he used these references to give them an understanding of his political and economic arguments against British rule. In addition to this, Paine argued that it is "absurd, in supposing a continent to be perpetually governed by an island (34)." This message, along…
African Americans as a whole have been thought of as a secular group, having lost any sembalance of the continent from which they came(__________). However, people of the Trans-Atlantic African Diaspora have had quite a unique experience in the United States. The diverse sub cultures within the larger African American population are indicative of this unique experience. Yet in spite of African American’s unique qualities scholars and critics abound have asserted that African American heritage was obliterated by the chattel slavery system. Although slavery greatly restricted the ability of Africans in America to freely express their cultural traditions, many practices, values and beliefs survived. This fact is extremely apparent when Gullah…

What if other slaves chose to rebel similar to Turner’s plan and cause a pandemonium among the whites? There is no humanity in slavery or mercy upon the slaveholder’s soul. Turner’s acceptance for the crimes proved to be truthful. For example, the author obtained permission of the Jailor to visit Turner and was willing to share his free confessions of the origin for the slave’s movement. Turner explained his crimes in expressive details honestly to Thomas Gray, which showed the form of the document to be accurate as he stated, “Sir, you have asked me to give a history of the motives which induced me to undertake the late insurrection, as you call it, to do so I must go back to the days of my infancy and even before I was born” (6). Therefore,…
For Washburne, learning is a process through which individuals acquire the knowledge to solve problems they encounter in their everyday life. An example will be the one of a kid who is born in Africa. The kid will learn by observing older people that respect is very important and that in case of a problem with a person, his parents must be associated in order to avoid a bigger issue with the whole community. (Jeff Cobb, 2011) defines learning as “the lifelong process of transforming information and experience into knowledge, skill, behavior and attitude” (www.missiontolearn.com). Jeff Cobb explains that people do not need to take classes or courses, de not need degrees or certificate to learn but the learning process does requires practice, reflection, social interaction and interaction with the environment. To learn, one does not have to go to school but need to interact with people in order to learn from them and use the knowledge to solve problems. Learning does not happen consciously (pigmies in equatorial forest learn to hunt and fish without even knowing) but individuals who go to school put more effort at learning specific things. While learning is a process to…

Many people might consider high school as a place to learn and make friends, but according to a recent survey, about one in ten people do not enjoy school. Like these teens, Holden Caulfield, who is the main character in the novel, Catcher in the Rye written by J.D. Salinger, experiences a struggle between his close friends. These struggles were caused as part of him tries to be at an adult level and the other part tries to keep away from “phonies”. Language, in itself, is exceptionally powerful. Language has the power to stop wars, to solve conflicts; however, perhaps one of the most important forces of language is the power to create emotion, to create meaning. The words an author elects to use can effectively impact one’s own reality. In the event that language is effectively utilized, it can evoke deep emotion from the reader and induce extensive thought in order to connect the words to the meaning. An author can manipulate language to convey their message by their choice of diction throughout a passage or by further applying various forms of figurative language to create imagery.…
If it weren't for Thomas Paine, you and I wouldn't be in where we are right now. You and I wouldn't be sitting here together like the way we are at this moment, at this time. In 1766, Thomas Paine wrote a pamphlet titled "Common Sense." And he wrote it for a very important reason; independence for America. Here is why I think if Thomas Paine never existed, America wouldn't have independence and freedom.…
Curley’s wife explores the dichotomy of good and bad. Steinbeck immediately creates a picture of negativity surrounding the character by using provocative adjectives like ‘jailbait, bitch’ and ‘tramp’.
