Joints are the connections between bones, they are what support you and provide you with the ability to move. However when these joints get damaged due to injury or decease the movement of the body in that particular area becomes hampered, causing pain ranging from mild irritation to debilitation. (Zelman, 2017) This pain is referred to as Joint Pain and has been plaguing human civilisations from as early as our hominid ancestors (Sarah Knapton, 2016).

The Type of Joint Pain which is most common and affects around 50 million people in the United States of America is Arthritis (Carson, 2017). Arthritis is the inflammation of joints, it causes swelling of the joints and severe pain, and it can go so far as to cause disability (usually of people over the age of 50) if not treated properly (Carson, 2017). There are 4 main types of Arthritis namely, Osteoarthritis, Rheumatoid Arthritis, Post-Traumatic Arthritis and Migratory Arthritis. Osteoarthritis causes the deterioration of joint cartilage and underlying bone and is the most common type of Arthritis. The disease can cause breakdown and eventual loss of the cartilage joints, and is most prevalent in the hip and knee region (Carson, 2017). Rheumatoid Arthritis is a chronic inflammatory disorder that affects the joints of hands and feet, by affecting the lining of joints (Carson, 2017). Rheumatoid Arthritis may also be an immune disorder. This disease does not only affect the lining of joints but also other organs (e.g. skin and eyes) (Carson, 2017). Migratory Arthritis is the spread of joint pain from one joint to another. This disease causes joint pain and stiffness and can affect people of any age group (Carson, 2017). Post-Traumatic Arthritis is the he wearing out of injured joints, this occurs from an injury or minor fracture that changes the mechanics of a joint.
