Joker In The Dark Night
As my character, I decided to analyze the Joker from the movie The Dark Night, because I believe it is a character that has a very disturbed and complex personality to explore. Psychological disorders are psychological or behavioral patterns, potentially reflected in behavior, that is normally associated with distress or disability, and which is not considered part of normal development in a person’s culture. Many people talk about his character and consider him a psychopath, which is actually not exactly true. The Joker feels emotions and the definition of psychopathy says that a person does not have any feelings or emotions. Keyser (2013) supports this point by saying “unlike most murderers, who act in the heat of a passion, and later feel guilty about what they have done, psychopaths feel no such remorse.” Keyser also explains that psychopaths can be socially smart if they chose to, that’s how they seduce their victims. For example, a blind person can learn the colors and when to use them such as, blue sky, green tree etc, even though they cannot see the colors. Psychopaths can learn the same way to mimic emotions, yet they don’t feel. According to Keyser psychopaths don’t feel any distress, but this is not the only case with Joker. His emotions might be sick humor or anger, and often sadness when one of his plans …show more content…
Additionally, the person suffering from this disorder may also be aggressive or ruthless. Just as Kivi (2012) describes, “In the case of antisocial personality disorder (ASPD), a person's personality becomes overwhelmed by a mental health condition that causes patterns of manipulation and violation of others around them”. The Joker shows this disorder basically throughout the entire movie. It is not necessarily against his family, but against the entire city of Gotham, including

However, I also think that my original ideas were inherently flawed, in that I established psychopathy as inherently incapable of any form of empathy, while it seems the truth to that is more nuanced. The general consensus appears to be that psychopaths have the ability to empathize on a cognitive level, but that they lack the ability to necessarily empathize on an emotional level, especially with emotions such as fear and sadness. I would be interested in further research determining if this may be due to amygdala dysfunction, since that area of the brain is related to fear responses. Since psychopaths show lower levels of fear themselves, this may be an inhibiting factor in their ability to empathize with others, since one cannot empathize with emotions they have not…

Hatchett (2013) claims that, patients diagnosed with ASPD also tend to be aggressive towards other humans and animals, and these people are commonly unable to hold a solid relationship with other people. Overall, in a worst case scenario antisocial personality disorder patients are commonly arrested for harassment, and they often pursue other illegal activities (Nadelson, 2000). Antisocial personality disorder is considered one of the most difficult of all personality disorders to treat. Individuals rarely seek treatment on their own and may only initiate therapy when mandated by a court. The efficacy of treatment for antisocial personality disorder is largely unknown. Few individuals seek medical attention specifically for antisocial personality disorder, or ASP. Antisocials who seek care do so for other problems such as marital problems, alcohol or drug abuse or suicidal thoughts.
