For example, when Jaime and Esteban Trueba are having a conversation about the values of charity, Esteban told his son that he was “a hopeless loser” because he has “no sense of reality” due to him having “never taken stock of how the world really is” and by “put[ing] your [Jaime’s] faith in utopian values that doesn’t even exist” because “[c]harity, like Socialism, is an invention of the weak to exploit the strong who make up the rules think like you” (297). However, when Jaime defends his opinions by stating, “Helping one’s neighbor is a value that exists” but not only that, Jaime is at a point “where they [Jaime and Clara] have lost count of how many people they were caring for; they were surprised whenever somebody appeared at the door to thank them for a favor they could not recall” (221). On the one hand, Esteban Trueba’s blood runs in Jaime’s veins, but Esteban’s perspective of providing aid for destitute people is looked upon as useless.
