James “Logan” Howlett, also known as Wolverine is a mutant from the X-Men universe who is normally seen as an outsider, even to other mutants. He is a respected member of the X-Men team, whose goal is to establish a peaceful unity between mutants and non-mutant people. Inversely, the rival faction is known as the Brotherhood of Mutants, whose ultimate goal is mutant supremacy. Although Wolverine’s allegiance throughout the films and comics lie with the X-Men, a questionable dilemma is whether or not he would join the Brotherhood of Mutants had he encountered them first. In the beginning of the essay Didion creates an image by presenting tension into the essay. She establishes this tension by using “uneasy”, “stillness” and “ominously” in order to create an unnerving feeling or sense of fear in the reader. She describes a fussing baby and her “rekindling” of a previous argument with the telephone company. These strange outbursts seem to be caused by “whatever is in the air”, building a large amount of tension throughout the first paragraph of the essay.…

Firstly, let me describe the approach I will be taking towards this piece of literature. The Reader-Response approach I can’t just rely on feelings and opinions, I must read and make connections and respond on those connections. With that being said I will start with what captured my interest. While going through the first couple of lines in the dialogue I began to paint a picture of Henri and Jeanne. Henri came across to me as a stubborn old scrooge who wants things his way or no way. He is very persistent about the races and his wife not attending.…

The Crucible, a play by Arthur Miller, shows how intolerance can corrupt a theocratic society. In The Crucible, this is achieved by a combination of three chief contributors. The paradox mentioned in his introduction to Act I, was and is entirely true in regard to the conflicting nature of the theocratic system and the human condition. First and foremost, conformity and forced control destroy the sense of trust between villagers. Secondly, intolerant attitudes ruin all creative thought and new ideas, which could have possibly freed Salem from its twisted thinking. Finally the Puritans created the same form of oppressive government they ran away from England during the 1620s.…

Meursault’s reactions are rarely what the reader envisions as appropriate. People feel disconnected-- disheartened and confused-- when Meursault claims his Maman’s death “doesn’t mean anything” (3). The level of indifference he feels and the actions he performs: making excuses to his boss, having lunch at Celeste’s, going to swim and a movie with Marie, all have the readers questioning Meursault’s character. This displeased feeling continues through the first half of the novel with Meursault’s uncaring and robotic behaviors of watching “families out for a walk… the local boys [going] by… the shopkeepers and the cats” (21-22). One then starts to wonder. One…

The tenth story of the third day in the Decameron is an exploration of language just as the rest of the book. Within this story, the smallest of words can make the biggest differences in how the themes can be interpreted. The genius of Boccaccio’s writing is that while he may have had different aspirations for the Decameron, the interpretations can be as modern as the Decameron is celebrated.…
