A Journal Critique of “The Forgiveness of Sins and the Work of Christ: A Case for Substitutionary Atonement.” In his article, “The Forgiveness of Sins and the Work of Christ: A Case for Substitutionary Atonement,” author Justyn Terry attempts to discredit those who object to the doctrine of substitutionary atonement through proper biblical theology. Immanuel Kant is noted as the chief critic of this doctrine so most of Terry’s writing is in opposition to Kant’s theology. While Terry does utilize the writings of Karl Barth and Wolfhart Pannenberg to support the doctrine of substitutionary atonement, this writer will focus mainly on the scriptural evidence of the work of Christ as noted by Terry. The doctrine of substitution teaches that “Christ died in the stead of sinners and in their place.”[1] This vicarious death, which means “one in place of another,” is supported by both the Old Testament and New Testament scriptures as well as the teachings of the early church. During the Enlightenment, philosopher Immanuel Kant objected to the claim that “an innocent third person could not suffer the punishment for the sins of guilty persons.”[2] While Kant’s criticism would require much of the scriptures to be ignored, his arguments were persuasive and significant. Terry first examines Kant’s objections and then supports the doctrine of substitutionary atonement through scripture. While examining Kant’s objections, Terry makes note of Kant’s approach to everything that is unknowable. Immanuel Kant simply dismissed anything unknowable and unexplainable in the scriptures as
