The message to this book is never to give up and have hope. I know this is the message because Salva is forced to run away from his family to get away from war. He walked for hundreds of miles trying to get to a safe place such as the refugee camp in Ethiopia. On his journey, Salva lost a friend; he lost his uncle; he was ignored and was considered the runt of the group, but that didn’t put him down. He never gave up, and he never …show more content…
lost hope. Because he never gave up and had hope he successfully made it to the refugee camp. On page 66, it states "No one shared anything with him, neither food or company. Uncle had always shared the birds and animals he shot with everyone in the group. But it seemed that they had all forgotten that, for Salva had to beg for scraps, which here given grudgingly. The way they were treating him made Salve feel stronger still. There is no one left to help me. They think I am weak and useless. Salva lifted his head proudly. They are wrong, and I will prove it."This shows that even if his Uncle died and everyone thinks he is the runt of the group, he wouldn’t give up, and he has hope. Salva is ready to prove that he is useful to the group which shows that he does not want to give up. Nya made meant distant trips to the pond and back home.
No matter what happened on the journey to the pond, Nya wouldn’t give up. Instead, she had hope that she would make it to the pond and back, no matter what the cost was. I know that never give up and have hope is the message because on page 14-15 it states " With the water balanced on her head, and her foot still sore from the thorn, Nya knew that it would take longer than coming had. But she might be home by noon if everything went right." This shows how Nya had hopes that everything would go right and that she would be back home by midday. This also indicates that Nya never gave up because even though there was a bucket of water balanced on her head and that her foot was sore, she kept walking
home. Knowing this, we can conclude that the author did have an overall message to the story and the message of the story is that you should never give up and have hope. We can also conclude that this is the message because of Salva's story which was even though he lost a friend, he lost his uncle; he was ignored and was considered the runt of the group, he didn’t lose hope, and he didn’t give up. We can also use Nya's story which is even though Nya made distant trips to the pond and back home. No matter what happened on the journey to the pond, Nya wouldn’t give up. Instead, she had hope that she would make it to the pond and back, no matter what the cost was.
