Background information
In the Chinese art history, landscape painting has been viewed as the highest form of visual art besides calligraphy (Stafutti 2008). The painting, Travelers among Mountains and Streams is highly regarded as one of the most significant and influential landscape painting, which was created by Fan Kuan in the Northern Song dynasty.

It was during the Song period where there was a widespread of idea about Neo-Confucianism. With this influence, artists back then believed that li (moral principle) exists in every manifestation and it is only through interaction with the natural world they could deepen their understandings about the relevant principle of integrating with nature (Rhonda 1998). Thus, Fan Kuan illustrated mountain landscapes as his attempt to attain his spiritual growth.

Description: Mountains
As seen in the painting, one of the attractive features is certainly the portrayal of the enormous mountains with masses of plantations on top. Fan Kuan painted the mountains with firm brushstrokes besides having irregular and uneven outlines along the slopes. It is also known that he has used texture strokes ‘brush dabs like raindrops’ in the mountains (Rhonda 1998), thereby

Fan Kuan had demonstrated this through the usage of clear outlines of the subjects to reinforce their dimensionality, rendering them to be more alive in the painting. With contrasting ink tones in the painting, this contributes to creating an illusion of space, on top of generating the mood and atmosphere of the scenery. As much as the painter is being inspired by his religion, this landscape painting has been successful in making the viewers feel as if they are inside the picture. It is no wonder that such masterpiece is recognized as one of the model landscape paintings in the Chinese art history with Fan Kuan’s intricate artistic

Jian's "White Clouds Over Xiao and Xiang" is considered to be abstract art. Its abstract art because it refers to the real world, in this case, a landscape of China's hills, but does not duplicate it exactly. The location of the viewer in the picture gives them a bird's eye view of the landscape. The viewer is not restricted to one part of the scene, but rather can move about the setting. They can choose to explore the scenery by moving their eyes across the various paths or climb the mountain simply by looking at the work of art. The style of painting the author uses shows an accurate depiction of a landscape but it is considered abstract because the viewer can still tell that the painting is not an exact replication of the actual scene. The brushstrokes in Wang Jian's artwork and the texture of the actual painting exemplify the abstractness of his painting. The objects in the painting such as the mountains, the trees, the little village in the center, and the river have all been simplified in regards to the way they actually look in real life.…

In the painting, Rocky Mountain Landers Peak, the artist Albert Biersladt used elements of art in his painting. I noticed he used value through the color green, its darker and lighter shadings throughout the painting. The artist also showed atmospheric perspective. He created an illusion of distance by reducing color saturation and less detail in the background. He also manipulated warm and cool colors to show more of a hazy atmosphere above the horizon line. Overall the artist, Albert Biersladt painted a beautiful painting he also showed great elements of…

The two ways are in paintings. Some Chinese paintings focus on a small natural subject, just as a bird or plant, close up. This technique is used to draw into emphasis to the beauty of the small and often overlooked. Another painting technique used to emphasise teachings of Daoism is the use of empty space in long distance landscapes. The intent is to make the scene continue to the infinite. Within Chinese poetry, a common subject matter is simplicity, and focusing on harmony with nature. Also, as Daodejing and Zhuangzi contained a significant amount of poetry, poets after have used poetry to examine and develop the theme and messages contained within the books. Finally, Daoism has had a direct influence on the art of Chinese garden design. The house represents the yang, with emphasis on the straight lines and square designs. For this reason, Chinese gardens are designed as the complementary yin, focusing on circular designs, curved lines, and naturally flowing…

For instance, the Mountain Path at Utsu takes on a less realistic depiction of objects on the screen. Instead, all of the forms displaying nature are softened and rounded with no clear outline in a more decorative manner. Color takes the precedence in this screen over contour lines. Roshu ultilized a technique called tarashikomi, which ink is applied to an already wet surface. One can see this applied with the two-toned pink flowers on the mountains, and along the hilly mountains, as paint seems to drip down. This technique creates a smudge-like area on the screen, which is similar to using ink washes to tone down an area in a painting. Tiaga, however, follows the literati tradition, which focuses on brush strokes. For instance, Tiaga is often described as emphasizing " brush-dotted textures, and a rolling, rollicking rhythm runs through nearly all of his pictures, implying an extroverted good humor." One can see these dotted textures in the foliage along the mountains and the leaves in the trees. Unlike more traditional literati painting that would have been in monochrome, Tiaga introduces "occasional dots of darker and wetter ink, and small areas touched with ruby red and emerald green colors, enliven this otherwise dry, airy landscape." These harsh lines demonstrate the autumn season to serve a decorative…

The style of this painting is abstract with simplified and exaggerated aspects. The water and sailboats have all been simplified. The boats that are closer to the front of the painting have been exaggerated more than the others in the distance. There are many horizontal lines within the painting created with the hard, exaggerated brush strokes in the water.…

This piece of art was created by Claude Monet. He is known as the classic impressionist. In this painting, he captures the ever-changing nature of light and color. Unlike a lot of paintings, you can see the brush strokes in this painting. But I believe that the brush strokes used help create the piece of art and they help show the leaves and flowers on the trees. Also, it helps make the clouds in the sky look more hazy and beautiful.…

Cronon mentions John Muir who captures the “romantic sense of domesticates sublime” who says the Sierra Nevada mountains “Are compactly filled with God’s beauty, no petty personal or experience has room to be (Cronon, 6). Muir’s description of nature supports detaching oneself from the wilderness and purposefully avoiding an intimate connection by describing the Sierra Nevada as divine, as opposed to an extended family member like Mauna Kea activists do. Muir’s language support marveling the aesthetically pleasing aspects of nature…

Mountain waterfall was painted in the nineteenth century by Charles Dickerson. This painting represents a waterfall located in the Adirondack Mountains in New York. Dickerson used oil paint on top of a canvas to illustrate the picture. I chose this piece of artwork out of the Siena College J. Standish Library because of how realistic it looks. The painting illustrates a scene in nature and if I could see this image in real life, I would.…

Travelers among Mountains and Streams is comprised of several design elements. Form, leading lines, and shape. These design elements move the eye throughout the painting in a continuous interaction between the elements. Each section is well balanced and rich in content. The large mountain in the foreground sets the foundation for the painting by serving as a barrier, keeping the viewers eyes from leaving the page. The area showing the travelers moving in the stream sets a sense of motion, engaging the eye to travel through the painting. The grand scale of all the elements inspire the viewer to be transported into the realm of fantasy promoted by Northern Song painters. The painting takes on a naturalistic feel that is derived from the combination of paint, ink, and silk. The people and mules moving through the stream bring a sense of scale to the painting. They are an important element in that they are in direct comparison to the large Mountain. The helps promote the idea that there is something bigger than all of of us and that humans are somehow spiritually connected to the earth. An important idea that Northern Song Artist aspired to communicate through ere work. The painting is done in a realistic approach yet is not set in a specific place further enhancing the dream like quality meant to promote spiritual communication and enlightenment. This interpretation is about the balance between the countryside and mans attempt to conquer it brought to life in the form of a painting by Fan Kuan. The infamous abolitionist Frederick Douglass once said, “If there is no struggle, there is no progress.” This statement is definitely true as people can’t bring about change easily or without opposition. This declaration is personified in Paul Farmer’s story as he tries to cure the world of tuberculosis. In Mountains Beyond Mountains by Tracy Kidder, we see all the challenges and opponents that Farmer faces in attempting to bring about good, but we also see the reward of fighting the long defeat and how these challenges are active in our own lives as we try to bring about change.…

Gim Hwangi was influenced by constructionism and geometric abstraction and soon became one of twentieth century Korea’s influential painters. In his pieces, he typically adopted the date of a work’s creation as its title -- 5-IV-71. His paintings illustrate the paradox that the modern artist faces while finding a distinctive, personal style. This image is considered both Buddhist or Taoist. The two circular radiating patterns incorporate both native and naturalized elements from diverse Korean and Chinese traditions.…
