Joyas Voladoras Analysis
A Hummingbird’s Life

In the story “Joyas Voladoras,” by Brian Doyle, he is trying to tell us a message. “Joyas Voladoras” is about hummingbirds, amazing yet very small creatures with beautiful colors. Joyas Voladoras, flying jewels, are what the first white explorers called them. Hummingbirds visit hundreds of flowers every day, and have incredible metabolisms that burn their calories quickly. They can fly backwards and can also fly five hundred miles without resting. They spend their lives fast, so they only live for about two years. Their hearts nearly stop when going into torpor, a very deep sleep, which is extremely dangerous since death is possible while doing this. The blue whale has the biggest heart in the world with four chambers.

Throughout the essay “Joyas Volardoras”, Brian Doyle describes the heart of different animals and gives details of how those animals live their life according to their necessities. As we can see in the first 3 paragraphs, the author introduces the hummingbirds to us with many facts and descriptions. Doyle begins this essay by saying: “Consider the hummingbird for a long time”, and then he starts to narrate how fast a hummingbird's heart beats and how strong but fragile they can be. As you keep reading, you will find out that, Doyle is not talking about hummingbirds anymore. Now he is comparing a hummingbird to a tortoise. He says:…

The research presented here examines the history, the pros and cons, and the future of maquiladoras along the United States and Mexico border. If you have ever had the opportunity to travel across the border it only takes a moment to see the maquiladoras flourishing in the Mexican border towns. Having had the opportunity on several occasions to take high school students on mission’s trips to work in orphanages in these border towns makes this subject of special interest to me.…

Cabeza de Vaca enrolled in the Spanish military as a mature man and battled with honor at the clash of Ravenna in 1512 in Italy. Due to his military assistance to the Spanish crown at that time and then well along throughout a short-lived civil war in Spain he earned the promotion as bookkeeper or also known as accountant and a lieutenant in the mission of Panfilo de Narvaez in 1527-1528. Have you ever been hurt by someone or have someone break your trust? Would you ever trust that person again?Or would you just never trust again? Brian Doyle’s essay made me think of these questions when he started talking about trust and giving our trust to people but always getting your heart broken in the end. In the essay “Joyas Voladoras” by Brian Doyle, it illustrates that you can try to protect your heart and trust by locking it up and keeping it from the outside world but it will always be broken by someone or something. Brian Doyle never says that he is using this theme because it is left to the reader…

These traditional account make it clear that food was and still is an important part of life. The traditional account dictates to the reader that food is a source of life and it highlights the importance of food and nature, which makes food available. I think that the natives relied on stories like these to convey that message because it's memorable. Since the story is memorable it makes it easier to pass along orally and easier for children to understand. This story format make that concept attainable for all people not just the educated. His story in particular almost identically reflects the book of Genesis. Both accounts almost included something that only the earth can provide being incorporated into human. Secondly, feminism is needed worldwide because of the extreme issues that are happening in other states. These are issues that are brought daily into national and international news. There are so many countries that don’t treat women equal to men, mostly because of their traditions but also for financial benefit as in China with the female dominated workforce. However they don’t have the majority in the workforce because of women rights but on the contrary to exploit both women and men. China is not the only country that “prefer” women to work in factories many countries do this including Mexico. Once again I had never paid attention to the maquiladoras that are just across the border where I have family members that work in some of them.…

Most of the beginning of American history seems like a race of conquest between the Spaniards and Europeans with Native Americans caught in the crossfire. A seemingly peaceful group of people, the Native Americans were under constant attack from the moment settlers arrived into their territory. Historians can pull from first-hand accounts and primary sources to piece together the history of this nation. One Spainard exploratory mission wrecked off the coast of Florida with about 400 men (OTP S1-6, OTP 22). After long battles and shipwrecks, the expedition was cut short and only four men survived, one an African slave and Spanish explorer named Alvar Nunez Cabeza De Vaca. De Vaca wrote a narrative explaining his encounters with Native Americans who had never seen white or black people before. De Vaca described the Indians as “war like people…and protect themselves from their enemies as they would have if they had been raised in Italy and in continuous war” (OTP S1-6). He explains in his narrative…

The killer whale is a particularly large-brained and long-lived species who evidences a high degree of social complexity in the wild.” (Noonan) Their behavior and relationships with other whales within the family, known as a pod, creates an immense bond between the animals. Whales that were documented inhabiting the Pacific Northwest, remain in their natal group for most, if not all, of their life. (Robeck) When in captivity,…

Writers have composed about a wide range of the spectacular elements of planet earth from the mightiest of oceans to the most idiosyncratic species of insects. Both John James Audubon and Annie Dillard describe their personal experiences of witnessing large flocks of birds in flight in their own respective passages. The two authors have similar experiences but they describe the birds in different ways. Both descriptions are full of colorful language style and diction, however their two different crafts differentiate the way the event is described.…
