Judith Rodin's Five Characteristics Of Resilience
Resilience is our ability to adapt and bounce back when things don't go as planned. Judith Rodin defines five characteristics of resilience as being aware, diverse, integrated, self-regulating and adaptive. I will examine awareness and integrated because I find these two characteristics interesting and an essential aspect of resilience. According to Rodin, being aware is an important characteristic of resilience because you have to know your weakness and strengths to be able to effectively prepare for disasters and respond to them. However, it is impossible to be prepared for totally unexpected things. One day in January 2004, San Francisco experienced a heavy rainfall. Residents found their streets and homes flooded with up to four feet of black water described as rain and poop. Later the city took steps to ensure this kind of situation does not repeat by mobilizing maintenance workers to clear sewers of debris. Daniel Homsey, director of neighborhood resilience manages a program called the Neighborhood Empowerment Network. It works with communities to build awareness of potential threats and then offers necessary support to implement resilience action plans. Awarness:

The characteristics of resilience can only be effective when the resources and money are available. Most communities cannot afford it and especially after they are affected with natural disasters. For example, in 2002 two cases of plague occurred in New York City. The doctors did not know how the patients came in contact with the bacteria that has caused the illness. So they used an information system that monitored and tacked about 90 percent of all emergency department in the city and was quickly able to determine that there was no outbreak in the city. The advancement of technology and the progress of man makes humans feel as though we are invincible, but when a natural disaster strikes we are reminded that Mother Nature still cannot be tamed and can strike at any time without warning. We have seen this in the past weeks with hurricane Harvey flooding Houston and displacing people who never in their life thought that their houses and neighborhoods might be underwater one day and left with nothing. Similar to current events, this image shows New Orleans, one of the largest cities in the world being put to its knees at the mercy of Mother Nature. As buildings are shrouded in the heavy rain and trees sagging in torrential winds. Being faced with such astounding force it’s easy to remember…

Resilience has a different meaning to different people. Personally, I view resilience as a preventative approach as a result of inflicted threats. The concept affects the entire ecosystem which is outlined by Urie Bronfenbrenner; from the individual to the Macrosystem. The determination of resilient practices depends on the context in which it occurs. Historically, resilience has been labeled as a deficit-based approach to overcoming adversity (Masten, 2001). Today, researchers and other professionals recognize resilience is more effective when applied through strengths-based approaches reassuring potential to “overcome” and “succeed”. Through “compassion” and “respect” resilience can be achieved.…

While education is known for its abilities to stimulate intellectual development, consequently, it nurtures resilience in the process. Resilience isn’t a trait that’s been innately programmed and ready to use when necessary, but rather a skill that is developed and built through experience especially when an individual suffers adversity. It’s a quality admired by many for its adaptability and elasticity when faced with failure, however, it isn’t a quality that many possess. For instance, Malala Yousafzai is an excellent example of resilience. In I Am Malala, Malala says “I don’t want to be thought of as the ‘girl who was shot by the Taliban’ but the ‘girl who fought for education. This is the cause to which I want to devote my life” (Yousafzai…
