Doodle from The Scarlet Ibis is an excellent example. It was said he'd die as a baby and even if he did live, he'd never learn how to do anything. Yet he did what was said to be impossible for him. Another example is Waverly from Rules of the Game. She taught herself how to play chess and soon became an extremely talented player and won every match she competed in. Then there is Isaiah Bird. Even though he had a terrible past and was born with no legs, he excelled at what he did. These people make it obvious that one's abilities are not predetermined and that they do have control over…

I was about 5 years old when my dad first took me outside on the patio of our home to teach me how to catch a ball. He said “stand with your hands apart and when the ball comes to you close your hands around it”. Well, better said than done. When my dad tossed the ball, I just stood there frozen, my hands still apart, the ball bouncing off the top of my head. Luckily for me, and my dad, he had the common sense to use a tennis ball……

It was my dream to go the 2018 Winter Olympic Games representing the United States of America. Many years later, fractures in both of my knees ended that dream. I thought that I'd be able to return, and would have a fantastic comeback story, but the knee pain never left. I was never able to return to the sport.…
