Have you ever broken a mirror and felt worried afterwards because of the supposed seven years of bad luck or if you were to choose, would you decide on a snow-white cat or a pitch-black one? It is incredible how, without even realising it, more and more people are becoming superstitious. In Albania, the superstitions’ subject is extremely fascinating.
In my country, the variety of superstitions in which people compliantly believe is extraordinary. In general, Albanians tend to relate their magical beliefs to significant events throughout their life. For example, you should never move house in February or December as it is considered to bring bad luck. It is advisable to enter your new house during a full moon. Moreover, you should not bring salt from your old house to your new one. When entering for the first time in a place, you ought to first place your right foot inside the room.
The white colour is popularly regarded as lucky. This is often linked to animals such as the butterfly or the pigeon.Traditional weddings include numerous superstitious rites and rituals as well. The bride, for instance, has to dip her hand in some honey and then wipe her husband’s house front door with it as it is believed to bring good luck to their marriage.
It is legitimate to say, in conclusion, that Albanians are highly supertitious. Being an Albanian myself, I feel inclined to add, nevertheless, that superstitions are results of different people’s observations. Consequently, I believe that there might be more to them than sheer coincidence.
