In this essay, I will explore the Laws of Moses. Primarily, I will outline what justice means and review how justice is portrayed in the Pentateuch through my extensive study and review of the books of Genesis, Exodus, and Leviticus. I will analyse the fundamental importance of justice and note where it is evident throughout the Pentateuch. The idea of Justice is deeply connected to the Torah. Justice can be described as what is right or normal. The quality of fairness of a law accompanied by equal treatment under law are common biblical themes. At the beginning of the book of Exodus, Moses and the Israelites are introduced, enslaved in Egypt. God calls Moses and instructs him to lead his people from Slavery of Egypt. The story continues with the Pharaoh ignoring Moses plea to release Gods people from Egypt. Notably after a series of curses and plagues on Egypt, the Israelites and Moses escape from Egypt. Significantly, on Mount Sinai, Moses was given the ten commandments. The commandments deal with man’s relationship with God and with fellow men. Towards the end of Exodus, Moses shows all the laws given to him by God as he had instructed, to the people. Additionally exodus concludes with Moses giving the people worship instructions. The story of the oppression of the Israelites is an example of social injustice. However, at Mount Sinai, God establishes the foundations of Israel as free people living in coherence to a social justice. God made a covenant with Moses and Israelites that renewed the covenant he made with Abraham. Remarkably, the ten commandments created a form of a constitution for Israel. For example, the creation of the Sabbath permits the levelling of social indifference. The ten commandments include laws about murder and adultery. The book of Leviticus examines how sinful people can live in God’s presence. The book of Leviticus analyses the three main ways in which God helps the people of Israel live in his presence. Chapters 11-15 in the book of Leviticus explore the laws of ritual purity. In addition, chapters 18-20 review moral purity . These chapters discuss themes of cleanliness and uncleanliness in relation to people’s lives. Chapters 11-15, review rituals that will restore cleanliness. Cleanliness can be maintained through observation and practice of the laws. Chapters 18-20 explore social justice, sexual integrity and the caring of the poor. An example of social justice in Leviticus is evident in chapter 19 verses 8- 19. Significantly, God proclaims several statements that he instructs Moses to relay to the Israelites. “Love your neighbour as yourself: I am your lord”. God wishes to create a moral and just society, the laws that embody moral purity in chapters 18-20 are an example of what Gods wishes.
