Ocean Terminal, the only cruise terminal in Hong Kong at present, offers only two berths for medium or small cruise ships but no facility for large liners. We urgently need to build a new cruise terminal because at the moment large cruise liners have to berth at the Kwai Chung container terminal when they call at Hong Kong. When the container terminal is busy, they may have to berth mid-stream and barge in the harbor. This would definitely affect the city’s image.” To solve this problem, the government announced in 2008 to fund and develop a new cruise terminal on the former Kai Tak Airport site, as a move to provide Hong Kong’s cruise tourism with strong software and hardware.
Cruise tourism is gaining popularity even among ordinary people - high-speed growth has been seen in the Asian market in particular. With a big deep-water harbour, highly-developed communication networks and tourist facilities, Hong Kong is an ideal place for developing cruise tourism. The city’s Kai Tak Cruise Terminal, is expected to support Hong Kong to get a foothold in the global cruise market. From its opening to 2023, the new terminal is estimated that would bring economic benefits of HK$1.5 billion to HK$2.6 billion while creating 5,000 to 8,000 jobs.
