The way that I look at Architecture

Nowadays there are so many fantastic buildings. Like wearing trendy clothes, buildings boast a gorgeous appearance using high-rise, glass curtain, curved, peculiar shape, and etc. As if wearing a slightly different uniform, Modern Architecture bubbled up with high technology and ostentation just for show. However, architecture is built on land, and human lives in architecture. The architecture embracing human should retain the fragments of memories before construction. From this, another new history can begin in architecture. That is the way that I think the social role of architecture. Then, what further need do is Modern Architecture and Architect? Let’s talk about that mainly with the public dimension of architecture.
Architect can produce a culture and symbolic value, but also criticize and worry about the times by using architecture. As the symbolic value of architect is more important beyond the building of simple residence, the role of public architecture is more significant. Then, what is the role of public architecture? In the movie “Talking Architect: Chung Ki Yong” Chung Guyon defines the public architecture as ‘to care for human living’. In the movie “City Hall” Yoo Kerl defines it as ‘open space for a lot of people use’, and Seung H-sang dose as ‘Not to suppress the surrounding architecture’. Actually I agree with those architects. But entirely in terms of those three comprehensive aspects, I think the new city hall of Seoul has some problems. The famous cities of the world have the landmark, such as Empire State Building of New York (Shreve, Lamb and Harmon), Eiffel Tower of Paris (Stephen Sauvestre), and Elizabeth Tower of London. These landmark seems like making harmony with surrounding buildings or standing alone in the middle of city. Likewise, the first rule, that I think the landmark of city has, is “harmony with surrounding building”.
