For many decades, people have been discriminated rather it’s because of the race, cultural differences, or appearance of the person everyone is viewed differently based on personal identity. When you’re being looked at differently because of how someone else views you it can be challenging to your character. In today’s society personal identity is still a major issue looking at all the riots we have going on with the police killings among African Americans, Latinos, Caucasians, and Etc. In the article, “Personal Identity” author Karl Perera he states that “Your personal identity is the way that you see yourself and is closely related to your self-image. It is very important to you because it will affect the way you feel about yourself and how you behave in challenging situations. Your personal identity includes: Who are you? What are your values? What is your physical identity (what you think you look like to others) also known as body image? The most important thing to realize about your personal identity is that it can be close to how other people see you in which case you will be in harmony with the world and others around you or it can be very different from how others see you and so you may feel you are misunderstood and you feel life is battling to make others appreciate who you are. “Some people think how they view you doesn’t have no effect on you but in reality it does. People typically ask me questions such as, Are in a gang? Do you play basketball? Are you Latino? It doesn’t affect me as much because my confidence level is so high. In the shoes of another person you can ask them questions like these above they may be insulted. When reading this you have to put your shoes in both point of views. Imagine being the person with no confidence nor self-esteem you would be very offended if someone approaches you or portray you to be something you’re not. No one can make you feel offended if you have the confidence to overlook negativity.
In conclusion, Whether People who lack self-confidence or have enough confidence can gain or have a good outlook on their own personal identity. It is important for people to overlook how others look at them. There should be equality among everyone, no one should be judged based on race, cultural differences, or appearance.
