The author criticizes the principles of the Shah’s regime by depicting the father of the Shah as a clueless, illiterate soldier who, in time, evolves into a ruthless ruler of the Iranian Republic. The novel paints the Shah’s rule similar to how it actually may have been viewed, glum and dreadful. The Shah and his bloodline dominate the nation and take advantage of the citizens by attempting to redeem the ancient state of Persia, but they fail horribly. Money and effort dedicated to projects benefitted the Shah and disadvantaged the people. On page 41, the people are seen to be rioting and exiling the Shah out of the country. The facial expressions of the citizens show their anguish and hatred towards the Shah. Panels of deaths and riots are…

The murder scene of Wad Rayyes and the suicide of Hosna, are extremely unusual because of the fact that it in Sudan this time it was exceptionally rare for women to murder their husbands as the narrator claims ‘it is not every day that a woman kills a man, let alone her husband’, yet in the chapter prior to the murder the narrator comes across soldiers looking for a woman who has killed her husband and this shows the change in behaviour in the Sudan, as they are moving away from their usual traditions and showing the social discord in the country as they believe they are developing like the West but they are in fact hindering their own development. Hosna’s suicide and her murder of Wad Rayyes is narrated by the comical character of Bint Majzoub, who in the novel is portrayed as an open woman who speaks her mind throughout as Tayeb Salih describes her as “uninhibited in her conversation” so it is of no surprise to the reader that she is the one who informs the narrator of the incident in the village when not a soul dares to talk about it. This is similar to the murder of Jean Morris by Mustafa Sa’eed as this is held back from the reader like the deaths of Hosna & Wad Rayyes are kept away from the narrator.…

Most of the story revolves around the conflicting views of father and son. Parvez idolizes the British lifestyle and culture and wants his son to become a part of it. He wants Ali to “get a good job now, marry the right girl and start a family” (120). Making it big in London would please Parvez, “His dreams of doing well in England would have come true” (120). The father-son struggle soon starts when Ali starts to fray from his father’s dreams. Parvez goes through many hardships to assimilate into Western culture. He left his native country into a new land where he works day and night driving around a taxi in order to provide for his family. His lifestyle changes completely. However, Parvez does not mind this at all. He is somewhat blinded by his concept “Western Culture”. Ali, on the other hand, is sickened by his father’s love for his new way of life. He traces his roots back to Islam, a religion that does not allow him to enjoy the social and cultural aspects of British cultures, such as drinking or eating pork. Kureishi uses this central conflict to explain how living…

In this essay, I am going to write about the theme of ‘love’ which is actually the main conflict in this whole novel. Firstly, we can see this aspect between mother and child when we read how loving was Azreen towards her mother when she came back from London. Azreen took over the duty to take care of her mother who was suffering from Alzheimer’s disease which was getting worse. Azreen cooked porridge for her mother like Madhuri used to do and fed her. This shows that Azreen loves her mother very much and feels responsible to take care of her after her sister’s death.…
