With the book being set in Jackson, Mississippi you can already conclude that the book will be about the extremities of racism. During the time that the book was written, Jackson, Mississippi had been on the news multiple times for the civil rights movements. One example of the racism in Jackson is how little they think of their help. It was known for its segregation and “help”. Even after Aibileen had raised both of her children Mrs. Leefolt still fired her for no reason other than Mrs. Hilly.
The dialect in the The Help helped get the main idea of the novel across to its readers. It exemplified how the “the help” was less qualified as the white people when in reality they were often times brighter and more intelligent. One example of this is when Skeeter Phelan gets a job writing about cleaning and she is unable to write it. But because of her lack of participation in the racism she goes to Aibileen for help in writing the articles.
The political issue in The Help is clearly the racism battle and fight for equality. The racism during this time gives the book its meaning and helps it to develop as a novel. Without this issue the book would have little relevancy and would not be relatable for many people.
