“Life is a dream for the wise, a game for the fool, a comedy for the rich, a tragedy for the poor.” -Sholom Aleichem What is life? Life is a day to day challenge that you never seem to overcome. There is no person who has never been faced with failure or struggles no matter how strong, rich, or wise they might be. Adversity shows the true character of a human being. How we view life shows our own perspective and mindset on how we manage and deal with what life might challenge us with on an everyday basis. Life for the wise is a dream that has been turned into a reality. The wise treat every moment as if it was their last, and they think of others. Wise people have a growth mindset, meaning they know life is not perfect and that you learn from your mistakes, because that’s what makes you stronger. Even though people say wisdom comes with age, I believe everyone with an ounce of knowledge is capable of being a wise individual. Therefore, I think of myself as a wise young adult in the making. For instance, gamblers get a feeling of achievement when they bet their lifesavings away. What does one lack when they have everything? They lack struggles that most people face in order to achieve a goal. For rich people everything tends to come easy to the point where they get

“If you don’t speak up, people will take advantage of you”(Simon 43). This quote is the best definition of what life really is. In life if you do not speak for yourself, people will push you around and take advantage of you. If you want something done right in this world, you have to do it yourself. Depending on others is what others want, but that dependency will take over your life and it will become something that is not yours anymore.…

When talking about the rich man in the poem, his father acquiesced his son to have everything he dreamed of at a young age. Once you attain all of your wishes, there’s nothing to strive for and you never get satisfaction. Since you no longer have motivation to succeed, you never get the joy of accomplishing a longed covet. Socs in Outsiders also get everything handed to them just as the rich man did. Easily, any brand of car or clothing was within their reach. Therefore, Soc’s took their costly cars for granted; while greasers had to work 9 to 5’s to earn what the Soc’s had. Poverty will never strike the Socs horribly, and they will never know what it’s like to work so arduously for what they are accustomed to now.…

Everyone has their own story to tell, but some actually do tell it while others keep it a secret. Some people may think that they know me, but really all they know is my name. What does life mean to me? To me life is about trusting our feelings and taking chances, losing and finding happiness, appreciating the memories and learning from the past. It’s not what I have been through in my life that defines who I am, it’s how I got through it that makes me the person than I am today.…

For once the American Dream “had meant something nobler” (Source 7), but over time it has become the want for individual material success. When one comes from a background of having nothing, he/she begins to become eager for success and wants to get something for themselves. This eagerness causes them to work hard and eventually they would be able to “…improve their lot in life…” according to W. Michael Cox and Richard Alm in By Our Own Bootstraps. Life is one of those words that can be shaped however one may please and turned into an idea suited for themselves. For example, “Life is like photography. You need the negatives to develop” (Brown). There are many metaphors used to describe life depending on whether it is an optimistic or pessimistic view. Two comparisons some may make about life are having to do with having their life course mapped out and then, to its polar opposite, going through each day without a clue. For instance, when one says “life is the clouds” they are referring to having life figured out and then thinking of it as “life is wearing a blindfold” has a different take on it expressing not knowing which choice to make next because you do not know where you are going. There are those who seem to be born with great intellect and direction knowing each and every step they are going to make and also those that have trouble figuring out the simple tasks. For people who may sometimes find themselves feeling they are stuck in a rut in life they should remember that life can be seen as steady planned out routines but can then also be viewed blindly with every step depending on how they choose to view it themselves.…

Life is a gift. It is an honor, a spark, an excitement. We all have a world of our own. Albert Camus, once said, “You will never be happy if you continue to search for what happiness consists of. You will never live if you are looking for the meaning of life” (Camus, 1946). Life is about living to your fullest abilities. Why waste our time looking for the meaning of each breath we take? Each person is a part of life. Each life has a world of its own. I believe that the meaning of life, is to find meaning in our own life.…
