Keerplunk Activities Analysis
The production of the activity the giant ‘KerPlunk’ successfully achieved the task of exploring sociocultural influences, specifically activities that could encourage outdoor play. This was achieved through developing the activity for kindergarten children that focused on social skills and fine motor skills.
(E1) The design of the product promoted the kindergarten students to develop their social skills, fine motor skills and numeracy skills. This was observed as the students had to learn to take turns, learn to gently pull out the straws and count and write numbers. (E3) Outdoor play is important as it increases and develops children social skills and helps to build confidence.
Building confidence is important in a child’s growth as it helps them to learn and try new things, the practical helped to achieve this as the children had to take turns in pulling out a straw being confident that little or no balls would drop. The activity helped the children to develop their fine motor skills and helped to learn maths in a fun way whilst outdoors. Problem solving skills were also encouraged as the children needed to carefully calculate which straw to move in order to allow for the dropping of the balls. Children were also rewarded instantly when they had successfully completed each task.
(E4) In contemporary society there is an increasing understanding of the importance of outdoor play as it helps a child’s wellbeing. This is a problem as outdoor play is diminishing, more and more children aren’t playing outside and learning and experiencing new things. Playing outside gives young children the chance to explore the natural environment and have adventures. They can play their favourite games, test their physical limits, express themselves and build
self-confidence.
Overall the wellbeing of children can be assisted by nature. the activity was success, the kindergarten children enjoyed themselves as they learnt how to pull the straws out and learnt to count the balls and write down numbers and tally’s whilst being outdoors and exploring.
