Ken Howard has been a working member of the Screen Actors Guild for over 40 years and on September 24, 2009, he was elected as the National President of The Screen Actors Guild. Ken acted in TV, theater and film and his best remembered shows ran on CBS called “The White Shadow” which aired from 1978 through 1981. In the series, he played the part of a white coach to an urban basketball team. Ironically, Ken was nicknamed the White Shadow in 1961 by the Long Island press when he was in high school. He received that nickname because he was 6 foot 6 inches and he was the only white starter on
the Manhasset High School varsity basketball team when he was growing up in Long Island, New York.
Before his “The White Shadow” series Ken appeared on “Adam’s Rib,” “Dynasty,” “30 Rock,” “the West Wing,” “NYPD Blue,” “The Office,” “Law & Order SVU,” Boston Legal,” “Curb Your Enthusiasm” and “Crossing Jordan.”
In addition to acting, during the mid 1990s Ken Howard taught at acting and public speaking at the Harvard University.
Acting president of the Screen Actors Guild, Gabrielle Carteris said in a statement, “Ken was an inspirational leader, and it is an incredible loss for SAG-AFTRA, for his family and for everyone who knew him. He was a light that never dimmed and was completely devoted to the membership. He led us through tumultuous times and set our union on a steady course of excellence. We will be forever in his debt."
National executive director of SAG-AFTRA, David White, released a statement via the Los Angeles times. He said, "Ken was a remarkable leader, and his powerful vision for this union was a source of inspiration for all of us. He was an exceptional person, and we are deeply saddened by his passing. He had a remarkable career and he never forgot what it was like to be a working performer."
