In the early 1920s, as World War I ended, nations looked for peace as an outlet and hope for the future. As time passed, most countries were happy that the Great War had ended, however they were upset with the outcome. Since there were many costly expenses from the war, it caused many of the hostile nations to look for strong rulers for change. This allowed many harsh dictators to rise to power. These dictators were aggressive rulers and took forceful actions. In order to combat these aggressive rulers, other nations tried to resist war and give in to their demands. This type of action was known as appeasement. Not all countries felt the same way about this response; other countries believed that a collective security would work better.…

William Du Bois's paternal great-grandfather was an ethnic French-American, James Du Bois of Poughkeepsie, New York, who fathered several children with slave mistresses. One of James' mixed-race sons was Alexander, who traveled to Haiti, and fathered a son, Alfred, with a mistress there. Alexander returned to Connecticut, leaving Alfred in Haiti with his mother. Alfred moved to the United States sometime before 1860, and married Mary Silvina Burghardt on February 5, 1867, in Housatonic, Massachusetts. Alfred left Mary in 1870, two years after William was born. William's mother worked to support her family (receiving some assistance from her brother and neighbors), until she experienced a stroke in the early 1880s. She died in 1885.…

The movie Hacksaw Ridge, written by Robert Schenkkan and Andrew Knight and directed by Mel Gibson was in my opinion a really good movie, especially knowing that the movie based was on a true story. I knew that you could be a conscious objector but I never knew that you could refuse to use a weapon. What is interesting to me is that in 1945 you would not think that someone would go against the norm and especially in time of war when it is a requirement to fulfill the duty of handling a weapon. In my opinion, it is very risky to go to war without a weapon, even if you are a medic because you are putting yourself at a higher risk of being killed. It just goes to show that by staying true to what you believe in and by putting your faith in God,…
