ABSTRAKSI

Manusia sebagai salah satu sumber daya dalam perusahaan mempunyai peranan sangat penting dibandingkan dengan sumber daya lainnya, karena manusia merupakan faktor penggerak dari seluruh kegiatan perusahaan. Perusahaan harus dapat memberikan perhatian lebih terhadap tenaga kerjanya.

Motivasi merupakan suatu konsep yang bersifat penjelasan yang sering digunakan untuk mengamati perilaku seseorang. Motivasi merupakan dugaan, dimana harus memanipulasi kondisi-kondisi tertentu dan mengamati bagaimana perilaku berubah. Berdasarkan perubahan-perubahan yang diamati, dapat ditingkatkan pemahaman akan motivasi tertentu. Karyawan yang termotivasi dapat menghasilkan produk atau jasa yang bermutu tinggi, mereka lebih cenderung produktif daripada karyawan yang tidak termotivasi.

Salah satu teori motivasi yang dikemukakan oleh David Mc.Clelland's. Motivasi merupakan suatu proses pengaturan pilihan di antara bentuk altematif dari aktivitas sukarela. Umumnya perilaku berada dalam kendali orang bersangkutan dan dimotivasi. Motivasi adalah hasil dari tiga faktor, yaitu dorongan dalam diri orang-orang untuk mengatasi segala tantangan dan hambatan dalam upaya mencapai tujuan (kebutuhan akan prestasi), dorongan untuk berhubungan dengan orang-orang atas dasar sosial (kebutuhan akan afiliasi), dan dorongan untuk mempengaruhi orang-orang dan mengubah situasi (kebutuhan akan kekuasaan).

Motivasi karyawan yang tinggi akan berdampak pada prestasi kerja karyawan yang tinggi pula. Demikian juga sebaliknya, motivasi karyawan yang rendah akan mengakibatkan prestasi kerja karyawan yang rendah pula.
