Kids Are Spoilt
Excessive materialism makes children spoilt

Nowadays, you often hear older people say ‘These kids today – they have everything’. Of course, they are referring to material goods such as clothes, electronic equipment and so on. Is it true that today`s young people are spoilt by having too much given to them? To begin with it would be worth focusing on what do we mean by a spoilt child. A short description could be as follows undisciplined, manipulative, and unpleasant to be with much of the time. He does not follow the rules, does not know the difference between his needs and his wishes, insists on having his own way, makes unfair or excessive demands on others, does not respect other people's rights. Taking the features into consideration I would say that to a certain extent they are caused by excessive materialism, meaning giving too much to children, of their lenient and permissive parents. First of all, kids are not spoilt by just having and gaining a lot of different things such as MP3`s, mobiles and fashionable clothes, but by their parents and other members of the family who are giving them everything want they want when they want it. The reason some parents are too lenient is that they confuse the child's needs with his wishes. They do not want to hurt their child's feelings or hear him cry. They may choose the short-term solution of doing whatever prevents crying, for instance, buying different things, which, in the long run, causes more harm to the child. Second of all, the parents should teach their children that in the real life they will not always get what they want without any effort. Kids become spoilt because they always get what they want without any work. The children could be praised for good behavior, following the rules and at the same time learn to do things for their own reasons like self-confidence and a sense of accomplishment. The parents may teach their children that they can have different things but only when they work for

The movie that I decided to watch was mean girls. This movie is about a teenage girl who lived in Africa because her parents were doing research and then they had all moved to America. The girl’s name in the movie was Cady and she had never been home schooled before she moved to the United States of America. Her first couple of days was rocky but she eventually made friends with two art students by the name of Janis Ian and Damien, her new friends told her to be careful around the popular girls in school known as the plastics. One day while Cady was looking for her friends, a girl by the name of Regina George the main leader of the plastics wanted her to join their group because she thought she was really pretty. Cady becomes a part of the group, but Janis convinces her to get revenge on Regina George because of Janis’s personal experience with Regina. Cady declines on getting revenge until Regina George gets back with her ex-boyfriend Aaron Samuels who Cady liked and Regina claimed she would put in a good word for Cady. Cady then decided that she would get revenge on Regina, so the movie is basically showing how Cady evolved from a sweet girl into a typical teenage girl. The three theories that I decided to pick for this movie were Social Learning theory and Behaviorism. I chose social learning theory because the theory stated that an individual’s behavior will be influenced by the environment around them, and since Cady was around the plastics that always spread mean and vicious rumors she became one of them. I chose behaviorism because Skinner stated behavior is a response to the environment which would explain why Cady decided to get even with Regina because that is what Regina George would do. Another theory that I thought that was displayed in the movie would be Dollard and Miller’s learning process which consisted of five steps, those four steps would be drive, cue, response, reinforcement effect. Drive is defined as a promotion of a specific action.…

Allison J. Pugh took the words right out of my mouth when writing her article on parents spending too much money on material items for their children. Commodity consumption for children has exploded to $670 billion spent annually on or by children in the United states in 2004 and there is a good chance its only getting higher. She branches off in the article going into several different topics on how the adults and children are effected by their desire to want to belong in society and how it affects the relationship between the parents and the children. It also focuses on the corporate marketers and how they tend to sell a fantasy to the children, reeling them into having a desire to have the product. This being done by the marketers, it also allows the parents to have the desire for their children, resulting in buying the product.…

At the age of two or three, young kids are already demanding so much out of their parents to satisfy their needs. Most parents are useless when giving into their kids. Kids nag their parents into buying something that will make them satisfied. By spoiling your kid it makes it easier for them to get their hands on products because they are taught to behave in that manner. Cook mentions that parents are stuck between giving what their children want or risking their child becoming an outsider in society, we ask the question if parents are doing the right thing. "If it's within kids' reach, they will touch it and if they touch it, there's at least a chance that Mom or Dad will relent and buy it."( Cook 202) Advertisement is not only viewed to teenagers and adults but to kids as well.
