HIST 485: Violence in Greece and the Balkans

Description and Objectives
This course will examine the history of Greece and the Balkans with an emphasis on the exploration of conflicts in the region: Wars, civil wars, ethnic conflict, religious conflict, political violence (revolutions, dictatorships, terrorism, etc.), ethnic cleansing, banditry and crime, social violence (blood feuds etc). The purpose would be to debunk certain ideas regarding violence in the region through the examination of the causes and effects of violence.
Requirements
Students will be graded on the following criteria:
Class attendance and participation 15%
Readings Responses 15%
Book Presentation 20%
Paper 50%
There are four requirements for this class, each of which is responsible for a significant portion of your final grade. The first requirement is your presence and participation in our meetings and discussions. You must have done the readings specified for that day and be prepared to engage your fellow classmates in discussing the topics that appear relevant to you. Class participation will represent 15% of your grade.
The second requirement, closely related to the first, involves producing a one to two page response to your readings for each class. I will collect these at the beginning of every class and they will represent another 15% of your grade. Part of this requirement will include attending relevant lectures and workshops by visiting scholars that will take place this semester. I will be announcing these events during the course of the semester and you will be required to produce a 1-2 page response to the lecture in question for the next class.
