Kind Words Do Not Cost Much
16. How does this quote “Kind words do not cost much. Yet they accomplish much – Blaise Pascal” relate to the movie? How does this quote relate to bullying in general? (3 pts) Kind words don’t cost any money, but it means a lot to someone so it accomplishes much more. If you use kind words instead of calling someone mean names, it will mean more to them. If I told Auggie he looked handsome today, it would accomplish much more then if someone bought him a toy.
Finally- how would you use this movie (or original book) with a student/ child that is in elementary/middle school who is being bullied? What discussion questions would you ask your students/child as they are watching this movie to help them with their bullying experience? How could this book help students/children who are not bullied?(suggestion: answer in at least three strong paragraphs) (5 pts)

Then after we watched the movie I would go through the different things that Auggie did to stay true to himself. First, Auggie never gave up he still went to school everyday other then the day he said he threw up, and he never let his grades slip much. He stayed true to himself, he didn’t let the other kids change who he was on the inside, and he always kept a big heart. Even though he was different then all the other kids, he would think of something else to distract him from all the looks he got. I would also explain the importance of forming bond with the family during a rough time. Auggie would talk to his sister, and sometimes his parents. I think that is very important during a hard time, if you keep your problems in they build up and lead to short and long term

In the 1950’s people did not take bullying seriously, students would bully because they wanted to look tough, cool, be popular, and they wanted that self approval from their peers. They would bully mostly younger kids or students such as “nerds or geeks”(Steven) without having any consequences . The bullying would be physical or verbal just like in lord of the flies they would bully verbally by saying hurtful words like, "You're talking too much...Shut up, Fatty."(Goldin) or , "You're always scared. Yah---Fatty!"(Goldin) and physically when, "Jack snatched the glasses off his face…"(Goldin) or, "Henry and Johnny were throwing sand at Percival who was crying quietly again..."(Goldin). If you would tell an adult that you were being bullied they would just tell you ,“get tough”(Steven) or ,“stand up”(Steven) to the bully. People started to take notice of the effects of bullying in the 90s, when two seniors at Columbine High School in Littleton Colorado, shot twelve students and one teacher to death, and wounded many others. Many ask, what would drive these student to commit this malicious act? Well both of the shooters were classified as gifted children that had been previously bullied for years. Since then, society started to take a closer look at the side effects bullying and began to have a different perspective in bullying situations. Schools started to take gradual actions on bullying and began employing a…

Ms. Rossing one of many lesson, “what happens when we communicate effectively” (Seider, 2012, p. 199)? Many times, children tend to be bullied and they become bullies as well, yet on this text it took a strong individual with great moral, civic, and performance character, to see what could be changed to make the playground more friendly. Another occasion I would read this book would be to a student, or students that were displaying bully tenancies to see, that they need to be nice, so that they may be included in the peer interaction. Many times, we as educators tend to think a situation with the students is resolved by speaking to the parents, yet with children as young as my preschoolers, I work with it can be resolved or address by reading them books. When you allow the children to see where and how they are acting toward their peers, it makes a connection where they can point out where the concern is. Ms. Rossing said, “what are we going to do to fix the problem” (Seider, 2012, p.…

To be clear, all of us believe in rigor and in assisting our students to tap unknown strengths, but we also recognize the impact that Holden Caulfield has on students who are his same age. For freshmen, new to the experience of high school and only just entering adolescent arrogance, the subtleties of Holden’s struggle may be lost. To make Holden more accessible, we have chosen to begin this unit by focusing on the collective teen experience—weighing and discussing societal and parental expectations, peer pressure, limitations, and privileges. With this base, we then move on to introducing the idea of point-of-view.…

To display what I have learnt and show my knowledge of representations in the media of bullying I decided to produce a short film to show different aspects of bullying, using my investigation to help me to conform to the typical representations of bullying in this day and age. I took inspiration from different anti-bullying campaigns videos and pictures on the internet where the bully is shown to be bigger and stronger than the victim; therefore I took the same approach to my short film that I produced. I used the different types of bullying within my film with the bully shown to be angry and telling the victim what to do then the bully follows the victim around and eventually leading to the bully using physical actions to hurt the victim. In many of the different video’s I viewed on various websites they were all trying to tackle bullying many within the children to teenage category this is because most of bullying nowhere days takes place in schools, colleges where 47% of bullying is taken place in the classroom, 37% in the corridors and 27% outside of schools & colleges and through the internet where nearly 43% of kids have been bullied online through social media, this is why I took the same approach to showcase the bullying between younger people.…

When viewers hear and see the word ‘bully,’ they are swarmed with emotions, because of experience as a bully or as a victim. Pathos is the clearest appeal in Hirsch’s film. The topic of bullying evokes so much emotion in an audience and Hirsch knew he could channel these emotions to create a passion to end bullying. Hirsch follows the lives and family of five victims, displaying the brutality inflicted upon the individuals and the agony and sorrow caused by the ruthless bullying. In many anecdotes, Hirsch reveals each victim’s story.…

According to Saintyves (1989), “... we could consider this charming story a fable, suppose that it was invented in order to teach young girls that they should not talk to strangers” (q.t.d. In Pittman, p.72). This quote is explaining how in general this story is to teach little girls about how not to talk to strangers, and the consequences that are born from it. This tale could have possibly been invented to teach a moral value, but it could have also been created to teach a lesson on the violence that can happen in reality. The ideas of growth and development in this story, have to do with the morality side of this story.…
