FUN FACT
William Shakespeare is an anagram of I am a weakish speller.
Shakespeare died a very wealthy man with a large property portfolio, unlike most artists of his time. He was a brilliant businessman – forming a joint-stock company with his actors meaning he took a share in the company’s profits, as well as earning a fee for each play he wrote. Shakespeare’s death is a mystery but the life expectancy back them was lower than us so he died quite old.
BUBONIC PLAGUE IN SHAKESPEARE’S TIME
Bubonic Plague also known as the Black Death was a very deadly disease that was carried in rats and fleas, which lived on the rats. The disease spread very quickly and it killed millions of people. The bubonic plague is the most common form of the plague, produces fist-sized swellings, called bulboes, at the site of flea bites (usually in the groin, neck or armpits) After receiving the plague the victim dies within 2 – 6 days. The bulboes aren’t too painful but they turn red and then to a dark purple or black which gives the name Black Death.
As a result of the Plague wages and prices rose and the standard living for laborers rose accordingly but by mid 15th century living standards lowered again. Shakespeare himself was very afraid of the plague and it shows in some of his plays and sonnets.
