Although the Dutch did eventually gain independence and create the Dutch Empire in the 16th century, during the time of King Philip II, Abraham would have been under his rule. King Philip II’s rule was focused on expanding the Spanish Catholic influence on the world. Being Jewish, Abraham would have been exiled out of the empire, if he was caught practicing any religion other than Catholicism. Abraham would have been angered by the fact that he was exiled due to his religion and would want revenge on Philip II. Queen Elizabeth would have asked Abraham to be her eyes and ears inside of the Spanish Empire, which can be shown through the clues that have been linked to him including the map from Orelius’ Typus Orbus Terrarum, the Holy Bible written in Dutch, and Loyola’s Spiritual Exercises. Queen Elizabeth would have asked Abraham to pretend to be a trader from the Dutch area of the empire, interested in learning more about the Catholic religion. The Orelius’ Typus Orbus Terrarum, the first map of the world with all the land masses, would have helped him prove to anybody who questioned him, that he was a merchant who had come from the Dutch region, in order to trade with others but needed the map to know where he was going.
