China’s keystone space scientist Qian Xuesen (Hsue-Shen Tsien), widely acclaimed as the country’s "father of space technology" and "king of rocketry", died of illness in Beijing at the age of 98.
In 1953 Qian left China on a Boxer Rebellion Indemnity Scholarship to study mechanical engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and earned a Master of Science degree from MIT a year later. In 1949, upon the recommendation of von Kármán, Qian became the first director of the Daniel and Florence Guggenheim Jet Propulsion Center at Caltech. It can be his greatest professional fulfillment, in a manner of speaking. Although In October 1949 when he heard People’s Republic of China has established, he decided apply for naturalization and come back to China to build motherland.
