We developed an understanding of the long and short term risks with smoking through researching on the internet on websites to do with cancer research and ASH. We discovered a lot of benefits to stopping smoking. One benefit was that their life expectancy increased and stopping also helped their lungs to recover and decreased the risk of contracting diseases such as Emphysema. We found information about pregnant women and their unborn children and how smoking can effect them. We found that the child could be miscarried, or they could have a considerably lower birth rate compared to other children whose mothers didn’t smoke during their pregnancy. Furthermore, we also found information about how harmful passive smoking is to children and adults. We found out that young children could experience cot death and become deaf through middle ear disease. Furthermore, we found information supporting that adults could contract lung cancer through passive smoke which we found was 80% invisible.…

Secondhand smoke (also known as environmental tobacco smoke) is the smoke a smoker breathes out and that comes from the tip of burning cigarettes, pipes, and cigars. It contains about 4,000 chemicals. Many of these chemicals are dangerous; more than 50 are known to cause cancer. Anytime children breathe in secondhand smoke they are exposed to these chemicals.…

It’s to be said that smoking bans are the only way to protect nonsmokers. Although many states and hundreds of cities have passed smoke-free laws, more than 126 million Americans ages 3 and older continue to be exposed to secondhand smoke. Nearly 50,000 nonsmokers die from the secondhand smoke each year. Nonsmokers exposed to secondhand smoke at home or work increase their risk of heart disease and cancer. Brief exposure to smoke, damages cells, beginning a process that can lead to cancer, and increase the risk of blood clots (USA today: June 28, 2006).…

Second Hand Smoke In the 1950's and 60's scientists gave the people a lot of evidence on the deadly effects of smoking where the tobacco companies on the other hand tried to put the doubt in people's minds through the campaigns to show that it is not all true. By the time people actually decided to take care of their health and finally saw how life-threatening smoking could be by real life examples, the tobacco companies already got rich from its sales. Nowadays, nobody doubts that "firsthand" smoke is deadly to your health and it causes lung cancer and heart disease in adults and asthma and bronchitis in children. Now the industry is onto the secondhand smoke. Scientists and researchers are representing a lot of evidence and research that has been done throughout the years showing that the secondhand smoke can also cause a lung cancer in nonsmokers. The study has been done of people who have been long exposed to secondhand smoke and it shows that 26 out of 33 published studies indicate a link between secondhand smoke and lung cancer. The study estimates that the people that were breathing secondhand smoke were 8 to 150 percent more likely to get lung cancer. The tobacco companies are trying to argue the facts and are still in serious debate about the health hazards of breathing a secondhand smoke. A lot of anti-smoking organizations are trying to turn smoking in public into a private activity that does not have to involve nonsmokers breathing secondhand smoke. What is even more important is that many of these organizations convinced a lot of smokers to cut back or quit completely. The problem of secondhand smoke is increasing because it is so common in our society. It makes secondhand smoke the third-ranking cause of lung cancer among nonsmokers. Mothers who live with a smoking spouse have to realize the ill effects of secondhand smoke on children even before they are born. The smoking components reach the developing fetus through the mother.…

Research conducted during the past several decades clearly documents that exposure to secondhand smoke causes death and disease in nonsmokers. Some research indicates that secondhand smoke is more toxic and potentially more dangerous than the smoke that is directly inhaled by the smoker.14,15 Nationally, the US Environmental Protection Agency has found secondhand smoke to be a risk to public health and has classified secondhand smoke as a group A carcinogen, the most dangerous class of carcinogen.16 A recent report from the US surgeon general on the health consequences of involuntary exposure to tobacco smoke concluded that there is no safe level of exposure to secondhand smoke and neither separating smokers from nonsmokers nor installing ventilation systems effectively eliminates secondhand smoke.9 In California, the state Air Resources Board declared secondhand smoke as a toxic air contaminant for which there is no known safe level of exposure.17…

The loss of my grandmother was the saddest day of my life. My grandmother never smoked a cigarette in her life. She died of heart disease in 1997. Ironically the heart disease was diagnosed as a result of secondhand smoke. My grandparents were married for over fifty years. Even now I still can hear my grandmother saying “Robert you need to put those cigarettes down before they kill you.” Robert, my grandfather, was a smoker for sixty years. My grandfather would answer back “Well we have to die from something.” After my grandmother died, my grandfather lived another twelve years and he died of a heart attack. Every smoker understands that smoking is harmful to their health. Do nonsmokers know the hazardous of secondhand smoke? The loss of my grandmother elevated my interest in the effects of secondhand smoke; which have become an epidemic in the United States. A study from the surgeon general says 126 million nonsmoking Americans are exposed to secondhand smoke each year (Centers for Diseases Control and Prevention, 2006, para 2). More than 49,000 nonsmokers die each year (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2008, para 3).…

Secondhand smoke is the mixture of smoke from burning tobacco products such as cigarettes, cigars, or pipes and smoke exhaled or breathed out by a smoker (American Cancer Society, 2015). There are approximately 3,000 adult US deaths from lung cancer that has been caused by secondhand smoke exposure. Along with causing cancer, adults have a greater chance of developing asthma later in life if exposed to secondhand smoke. There have been studies that link secondhand smoke to stroke and heart attacks in adults. Secondhand smoke exposure causes approximately 46,000 heart attacks each year in the United States. The exposure to secondhand smoke increases the risk of heart disease by about 30 percent. Along with causing cancer some studies show that secondhand smoke causes mental and emotional changes in adults. These changes include cases of depression and other emotional changes. More studies are needed in order to prove the links between more mental health issues and secondhand smoke (Health risks of secondhand smoke, 2017). There are 7,000 identified chemicals found in secondhand smoke. Of those 7,000 chemicals 250 are known to be harmful and dangerous to the body including: hydrogen cyanide, carbon monoxide, and ammonia. There are at least 69 cancer causing chemicals identified in secondhand smoke. Some of those cancer causing chemicals include: arsenic, benzene,…
