Slide 1:
In this photo is the South Korean flag on a building. The South Korean flag, which is also known as the “Taegeuk,” has a lot of meaning behind the colors, lines, and shape that are presented. The white background of the flag means peace. The centralized circle presents the red area “Yang” is the positive aspect of the balance, while the blue area “Eum” is the negative aspects of the balance. The examples that are represented in this balance are things such as heave and hell, life and death, and good and evil. The four lines at the corners represent heaven, earth, water, and fire.

By having the ducks facing each other, it indicates harmony in the marriage. Traditionally, these carving are ducks are traditionally Mandarin ducks, but they are also used in Korean wedding ceremonies. They are gifted to newly weds to symbolize peace, fidelity, and plentiful offspring, as it is believed that Mandarin ducks, unlike other types of ducks, mate for life and mourn if one of the pair dies. Even selecting the individual who will carve the ducks is different. The person must be a male who must be an honorable, good friend and must have the “five fortunes,” which are: 1. Individual must be rich, 2. Individual must be of perfect health, 3. There should be no divorces amongst his family members, including relatives, 4. Individual has to have a “good wife”, and 5. He must have many sons. This procedure is of honor, and must not include any money exchange, and he must pray for the virtues that lie within these ducks (happiness, peace, prosperity, …show more content…
This photo shows that one of the main forms of entertainment that Korean families have is to watch television, whether it is entertainment shows to drama. It is one of the largest industries in Korea, as it is evident through the success of Korean dramas to Psy’s “Gangnam Style.” The reason why the entertainment industry is booming is due to possible factors such as how attractive the actors and / or actresses are to the clothing styles that are presented.

This was a photograph taken by me eating some Korean food. The dish that she is eating in front of me is called dukboki, or spicy rice cake, a type of Korean food. The origins of the food have been rumored to be back since the Joseon dynasty. The food has been found in past medical journals and has been part of the Korean royal cuisine in the Joseon dynasty. These days, dukboki is regarded as food that is sold usually by street vendors and small independent snack stands in Korea. It is also delicious food to enjoy, and is sold in many Korean restaurants in the United States.

The first sculpture or carved figure I am explaining, comparing, and contrasting is the Spirit Spouse. The Spirit Spouse is used to decorate with jewelry, take care with oil, and pray to. This particular African culture believes that you were in past life before the one we are currently living in. This culture believed that everyone had a spirt spouse. This replica is supposed to represent the spirt spouse in our previous lives. The better the figure looks is a indication that the owner takes care of the figure and praises it as well.…

This work of art is a commentary about the rulers and power in Nineveh. Through the deep, sharp, and large beard, the artist focused on important details of who once could have been Sargon, The True King. Because Akkadian art seems to be mainly about showing how dominate and influential the rulers were, their enemies devoured a lot of Akkadian art after the kings lost battles. Despite the fact the beard is not an average looking hairy beard, it doesn't take away from the image. Hair doesn't lay the way is shows in the sculpture, but more of a stylized texture.…

The roof is shaped and curved like a lotus flower with 8 petals. Lotus flowers are considered Vietnam’s national flower. “To the Vietnamese, lotus is known as an exquisite flower, symbolizes the purity, serenity, commitment and optimism of the future as it is the flower which grows in muddy water and rises above the surface to bloom with remarkable beauty” – (Lotus – Vietnam’s national flower, a symbol of divine beauty). “The outer square-shaped circle represents Yin while the round pillar represents Yang… This is law of circulation of universe” (One Pillar Pagoda, the most unique architecture).…

The Ceremonial Cup is dark brown with a shape of human head, and it is made of wood. There are two main parts of the cup-the head and the neck. The head of the cup is similar to an inverted triangle, while the length of the neck is as long as that of the head. The hair is expressed with crisscrossing lines that forming many small grids, and there is a small triangle on the middle of the forehead. Looking down, there is a repetitive use of seed shape pattern because the eyes and the mouth of the head are all depicted with this kind of pattern. It is worth noting that there are five straight lines stretching from the eye down to the bottom of the face, and there are four identical straight lines on the neck. Below the eyes there is a conical nose that has a closer distance with the eyes and the mouth comparing with that of human. There are two special patterns on both side between the ears and the eyes, and each one consists of four dots. The ears are much smaller than the…

Just like many other pieces of art, this sculpture has many symbols. King Senwosret III is shown with a very firm body, this symbolizes that he is powerful. He is wearing a head cloth called a nemes. Pharaohs in ancient Egypt wore Nemes. The nemes is another symbol to show the kings power. On the front of the nemes there is a cobra. The cobra represents that he is royalty. King Senwosret III is wearing a short kilt, which was traditional Egyptian royal clothing so that is also used to show he is royalty. If you look down at his feet, under them you see nine bows. These nine bows are also symbolic. They…

The "Head of a Pharaoh" shows details of the crown and face suggesting that this figure was an Egyptian pharaoh which represents a king or ruler within their society. The sculpture is broken at the neck which may suggest that the head was originally belonged to a full, probably standing, statue. They placed these types of statues in tombs to serve as eternal images of the deceased. The Egyptians considered the Pharaoh as their Gods. This sculpture shows a realistic portrayal of that persons face. By doing this the sculptor immortalized the soul thereby, keeping the person alive. This image would symbolize the eternal life and divinity of its subject, the pharaoh. The second "Female Figurine" image focuses on a well formed hip area probably representing fertility and procreation. This may also symbolize the growth of crops and livestock and a basic welfare among them. It seems to me that they struggled for survival and she may represent the center of the cycle of life.…

After the Industrial Revolution, new technology sparked a wave of factories and a new way to work. The nineteenth and early twentieth centuries were filled with examples of social and economic struggle. In order to have more profit, owners then crowded workers into dangerous factories for long hours to work on machines. Conditions for workers were universally bad, with some better than others. Women and children suffered especially in factory work. Gender was also an issue-- with women facing mistreatment and men fearing competition. Another problem was wages for men women and children. While the Industrial Revolution helped shape the world we have today, it was certainly a rough time for men, women, and children, their paychecks, and working conditions.…

On this display, a 360º view was available, so getting numerous angles was extremely easy. As I was circling around, I distinctly noticed how different the art looked based on what position I was looking. From some points of view, the faces of the three figures could not be seen at all, where from others the anguish was quite clear. If someone were to only have one viewpoint, they might completely misinterpret the story that is being conveyed. Along with the direction from where someone is looking, lighting played an important role into how differently the statue could look. There was an overhead light shining down on the face of the central figure, Laocoön, which casted shadows on the two other figures. As the perspective changes, the way the light and shadow appear also change. This makes the appearance of the statue look differently. Looking at the work from the left side in the front the light accentuates the face and showed agony of the face. Whereas the face of one son is concealed and the other is shadowed slightly. From the right side in the front, the face of Laocoön is halfway shadowed and one figure is completely turned away where the face of the third is dim. Looking straightforward at the sculpture, the central figure’s face is not very distinguishable.…

When it comes to the art, I was extremely fascinated with the coin featuring Hekate, minted in Stratonikeia. It was a coin of gold color with three heads of Hekate placed on one body. This was a reoccurring theme in art that Hekate was involved in. Hekate would either have three heads on one body, or would even have three of the same bodies on each side of a three dimensional, centered log. This coin has two dogs on each side of her and, she also possesses six hands, with each pair of hands carrying something different. One pair of hands carries a knife, the other pair with a spherical object, and the last pair with the torch. It makes me curious as to what each object signifies. Also the reoccurring theme of having either three of the same head or body makes me wonder what the number symbolizes. It is amazing to think that even during these early, prehistoric times, people had the mental capacity to create such intricate art. It is fascinating to think of the minor details in the carvings of such a…

Unlike the other magnificent design of libation cups which are made in the shape of nature form of horns, it is much similar to our modern drinking cup. In spite of its relative small size, the carvings are still has elaborate and deserve to be prized. It is noteworthy that the cup reproduces the motifs and patterns of archaic bronzes. Its body is carved with two symmetry taotie (饕餮)masks and a relief dragon is winding around the handle. It proves that archaic motifs originated bronzes were popular in the Qing Dynasty.…

The Korean entertainment industry for a long time studied and understood the concept of soft power and its uses on the world stage. They knew the only way to penetrate an American cultured global concept of the entertainment market is not by riding against the tidal wave of US cultural imperialism, but to adopt it. They understood that in order to appeal globally and make it, they had to transform the popular K-pop music production to be more American. And today, in the soft power stage, K-pop is considered to be South Korea’s most powerful weapon on the world stage. Bringing in revenues of billions to the country and making the country a top recognized business hub for investors from around the…

The television has also helped in creating a “community of consumption” in which possession of the same popular bands and styles is what binds us together as people (Belk and Pollay). Individuals want more and are in favor of what has been advertised as “new and improved”. We are defining ourselves by what brand of clothes we wear, to the music we listen to, to the kind of car we drive. The television portrays our ideal self image, presents detailed instruction on how to live, and strengthens the desirability of the material life depicted.…
